FORT IRWIN, Calif. -- Bureau of Land Management officials say as many as 100 wild burros will be rounded up in the Mojave Desert next month and put up for adoption because they keep invading the Fort Irwin Army base.

“A fort official says training is halted each time the burros roam through live-fire areas.

They also impact the habitat of the threatened desert tortoise.”

Hmmm....Live fire—pesky problem....

What a waste of taxpayer money. The Mojave Desert is full of wild burros. Fort Irwin has been there for many years. Now, some idiot decides that it is time to remove the burros. Are they going to remove the desert tortoise as well. At least the tortoise is an endangered species. The burro is not. If they could talk, I’ll bet those burros would say they would rather remain free than be captured and sold to someone to be penned up.

We had the same problem up here at NAWC China Lake in the 80’s. The burro's were walking runways at night and all times of the day. it was a safety issue more than anything to have them removed. Jet aircraft vs. burro, not good At first, gunships were thinning them out, then an animal rights group found out about the technique and went ballistic. Thus, round ups became the norm from then on.
It still continues.

Totally ripped-off olde joke:

Two soldiers were arguing over the carcass of an animal when their Lieutenant walked by.

“Sir,” one said, “we’re trying to figure out what this critter is. I say it’s a burro. Johnson says it’s a donkey.”

The Lieutenant snarled, “It’s an ass. Now bury it.”

The men proceed to dig the grave as a Colonel approached. He asked “So, are you digging a foxhole?”

They’re still in the brig.

Burro pot roasts, anyone? Probably too tough for steaks and chops.
