17-Foot Burmese Python Caught In Okeechobee County
CBS4 ^ | Jul 31, 2009

Posted on 07/31/2009 6:47:50 PM PDT by george76

A Burmese python, that measured more than 17-feet, was captured and destroyed in Okeechobee County on Thursday. The male snake weighed 207 pounds and measured 26 inches in diameter.

The reptile did not have a microchip, which is required for it to be a pet.

"The capture of this large python shows us how well these snakes can thrive in the wild and create a dangerous situation after illegal release or escape," said commission chairman Rodney Barreto. "It also illustrates why the FWC is partnering with other agencies to implement python control measures in South Florida. We will continue to push for additional measures to control the spread of Burmese pythons in the Everglades where they are reproducing in large numbers."

To date, seven permits have been issued and five pythons have been captured.

...a shame they terminated it. Should of put it into the halls of Congress and let the fun begin. Pelosi and her fat arse would have been enough for this reptile to digest for a few months...

...Hmmmm, I think I have an idea...

"To date, seven permits have been issued "

There is the problem.

Treat them like Texas does with feral hogs...any time, any means....as long as the ATF&E doesn't get involved.

26 inches must be the circumference not diameter.

17 Feet Long; 26 Inches in DIAMETER; 207 Pounds ???

This isn’t just a ‘math’ issue ...

Look at the picture. I don’t buy 26 inches in CIRCUMFERENCE.

Didn’t journalism once have a basis in facts and reality ???

Oh, forgot. That is such an out-of-date notion ...

AFAIK - the state cannot go after the pythons in the Everglades because it is Federal land.

Not really. William Randolph Hearst was known to play loose with the facts. Yellow journalism as a term for slanted journalism has been around for over a hundred years. Yellow journalism was coined because Hearst's paper, the Journal American ran a comic strip called the Yellow Kid, in which the main character wore a yellow night shirt. Color was extremely rare in papers back then, so the bright splash of color was a novelty.

Anyway, Hearst made up a lot of stuff. Made Dan Rather look like a piker. He's only one example. There are many.

D.C. is the most dangerous snake pit in the U.S. Pythons wouldn't stand a chance of survival there.

Pythons are eaten less commonly than other snakes. They are nonvenomous and lay eggs that are edible, though not widely used as a food source.
Boas do not lay eggs, but are also edible.
When eating any type of snake meat, humans take a risk of contracting parasitic infections. It is important to wear rubber/latex/plastic gloves when skinning and preparing the meat, just as with any wild game. Extra precaution to cook it to a safe internal temperature (160 F) should also be taken due to the nature of their food stuffs.
In many Asian countries, it is believed that drinking the blood of a snake, particularly a cobra, will increase sexual virility. It is generally mixed with liquour to improve the taste.
