Richard Couto plays with the baby horse, whose mother was butchered at a Miami stable, Monday, July 27, 2009. Since January, police say at least 17 horses have been butchered. While police will not share their theories on who is doing the killing and why, animal advocates believe the meat is being sold on the black market.

Hold on to your hats if things get really, really bad. In the Weimar Republic there were several serial killers who supported themselves by selling meat to butcher shops.

Hasn’t the legal butchering of horses been all but eliminated in this country? My guess would be that the activity has been driven underground.

At what point do we stop calling them “unintended consequences”?

These folks are pretty casual about security. If there were ONE incident of a horse going missing, much less being killed, my horse would be so surrounded by electronics a barn mouse couldn’t get near it. It would be living in my walk-out basement. As things are, our barn in the mid-Atlantic area, a long way from Miami and horse butchers, has a very large guard dog, and there is no way the horses would be outside unsupervised.

Maybe this is related to some satanist-or-voodoo-type cult thing.
Nothing would surprise me anymore.
