VANCOUVER -- It wasn't a pretty sight, but whale watchers on a cruise ship in Canada got more than they bargained for when they arrived at the port of Vancouver -- a dead whale stuck to the bow.
The vessel apparently struck the 70-ton fin whale in the ocean and unknowingly carried it wedged to the bow from Alaskan waters to the Canadian port. The adult whale was an estimated 70 feet (21 meters) long.
The Princess Cruise Lines' Sapphire Princess was docked at the Canada Place terminal Saturday with the whale stuck to it.
"Basically like a train coming through, it just hits them. That bow is kind of like a spear. And once they're hit by it, it probably breaks their back, kills them almost instantly," Craig Delahunt of Tymac Launch Service told AP Television News.

The Princess Cruise Lines' Sapphire HARPOON Princess was docked at the Canada Place terminal Saturday with the whale stuck to it. Several Japanese passengers could be seen looking over the side of the ship salivating at the sight of the exposed whale blubber. At the same time several Greenpeace boats were seen racing to the scene.

Unfortunately, this was all a miscommunication with the mostly English speaking crew. In an effort to improve interactions with passengers, the crew was exposed to the ‘Save the Whales’ campaign.
In an effort to mitigate this misunderstanding, the cruise line has now ordered and plans to put in every staff mess hall toothpicks with the phrase ‘Not on the ship’ printed upon them.

What is it with this guy? I have watched a couple of the whale war episodes and can't beleive this guy skippers a large vessel. He always looks like he just got done sucking down a quart of wiskey when he comes onto the bridge.

I watched that show a couple of times, and I always ended up by the end of the show screaming to the whalers “SINK HIM! RAM HIM!”
I just keep hoping the JDF sends down a cruiser and puts a 5” round through the bridge porthole and ends this idiots reign of piracy.

The Sapphire Princess is not little whalewatch boat, this thing looks like a Panamax size crusie ship. They use a bulbous bow, it looks like the whahle is riding atop the bulb, so drag wouldn't be significantly increased, and it would be very hard to see from anywhere on board. Also, it wouldn't significantly change the wake the ship threw. Plus if it's stuck on there what are you going to do about it in the middle of the ocean?? There's no way it's coming off until they can get some heavy equipment to pull it off.

I can’t believe Discovery has given a prime time show dedicated to terrorism/piracy.

Look at post 11, relative to the size of this boat, this thing was nothing... might have added some drag, but that’s about it.

"There's no way it's coming off until they can get some heavy equipment to pull it off."Oh, I don't know ... how about if you just back up real quickly.
After all, that's how I get the pedestrians off the hood of my car after I speed through crosswalks.

My 2 cents. Is the guy is a self absorbed gas bag that enjoys attention - especially from all the young ladies who crew the ship. As a Captain he sucks. One of his lines is "Give me passion over competence." They damn near killed some crew launching a small boat with techniques that had ever real sailor in the world laughing their a$$es off.
FWIW I am struck by the two worlds. Whale Wars and Deadliest Catch are filmed at about the same time. You watch Whale Wars where they can hardly get out of their own way and then flip to DC and the crew of the Time Bandit are fishing in 45 foot seas with a temp of 5 degrees, a 50 knot wind and loving it. The contrast of the two worlds is stunning. Free market at it's rawest and most basic and feel good at it's best.
