Boston’s WBCN is throwing itself a “Farewell” event on the air—it’s a four day Tribute to the station and its legacy as “The Rock of Boston.” The on air event kicks off Saturday, August 8 at 10 AM. WBCN is going away on August 13, when CBS moves the Hot AC WBMX “Mix 98.5” to the 104.1 frequency, to make room for a new FM Sports Talk at 98.5.

WBCN has been on the air as a Rock station for over 40 years, and was the home for such legendary radio personalities as Charles Laquidara, Howard Stern, PD Oedipus, and more. The station’s website already has some memories to look back on, with WBCN’s last year in photos, and a more extensive multi-year photo album called Cha-Chi’s WBCN Photo Album. Young'uns get their music from other sources these days. WBCN's ratings were awful and they figured sports talk would be a better sell, so that's what they'll do, as "WBZ-FM" albeit on 98.5, in mid August.

RNR ping.

In the mid-1980s you could hear Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, et al on this station. But also deep cuts from the Beatles and even Sex Pistols cuts like Holiday In The Sun and artists like Ian Dury.

How can any station today call itself “alternative rock” when there is no commercial broadcast support for genuine rock and roll by contemporary acts (who often reside on smaller labels just as they did in the 1950s and 1960s until the “hits” were picked up for redistribution by larger labels)?

I lived in Boston from 1987-1993 and it was a great place to hear rock ‘n roll. Charles Laquiedera was great in the morning...I guess all of us Gen X and older rockers are having to hang up our Zubaz pants and white Reeboks.

I have heard WFNX (101.7) play Led Zeppelin and the Beatles multiple times in the last week or so.
