In my cardiac rehab facility there is lady that had a heart attack on about the same day as I did. She lived in Poland when she was a child and was one of those who were occupied by the Germans (sweet woman, and I’ll be damned if I cant remember her name right now).
We talk about food sometimes because both of us have had a pretty significant change in our diet for obvious reasons. She talks about when she was a little girl in Poland, and overeating was not a problem.
She’s told me that when they went to the store you hoped to get potatoes, and bread was a real treat. There was always an abundance of vinegar though. She compares it to here now in the U.S. and despite living here her entire adult life, she is still amazed by how much food we have.
I had a guy from Ghana try to lecture me about how Americans are “wasteful” when it comes to food. I opined that we have that food because we are free as opposed to some African coutries where the government uses food to control their populations.
