Some of my faves..........early Genesis, Yes, Camel, Caravan, ELP, Harmonium, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator.............anyone ?

Dream Theater.

I grew up on Yes, Rush, Floyd and Queen. These guys are amazing. I have seen them live several times and they never disappoint, amazing talent.

Funny, they were criticized by the press for not making radio friendly stuff. Their response was the 77 minute epic ‘Scenes From A Memory’. Heh, that was a nice middle finger and turned out to be an amazing piece.

Very true! I myself have avoided Bobby in particular because he usually is the most vocal about his politics on-stage. But I guess I can’t stay away forever.

Somebody sent this to me a few weeks ago, reminding me:
http://www.newsmeat.com/celebrity_political_donations/Bob_Weir.php

The great thing about the Grateful Dead as a whole was that they were very apolitical. Even though you knew most of them leaned left...but you also knew without question that they were damn sure red blooded American capitalists :)

The music transgressed all that. They knew better than to pick a side. Songs like U.S. Blues hinted at some of their political notions, but without going to far.

Far too many acts in that scene today want to use the stage as a purely political platform...I used to go see a lot of live jammy music, but have tapered off because of that very reason.

I’ll put you on my Deadhead ping list! :)

If you like Tull, you’ll like Magma. Gypsy space prog rockers from France. They’re on YouTube.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - the “Who Do You Love” suite on “Happy Trails” is an outstanding example of the fugue... and fortunately unintelligible.

I’m still trying to figure out what the hell “Prog” Rock is. Is it supposed to be “progressive”? Or is it something else entirely?

Yes, "progressive" is the word.

Prog rock is my favorite genre as well. Everything from Pink Floyd and King Crimson to Queensryche and Dream Theater to The Mars Volta and Coheed & Cambria and many many more.

I seem to remember hearing once (and it may have been a rumor) that Jerry was a fan of the National Review and Buckley in particular.

Oh, yeah. All of those, especially Yes, ELP, and these days Dream Theater. There was an awfully long drought in between.

Tempus fugit. I heard a little girl ask her mother if she had anything like Hannah Montana in "her day." Yes...but we didn't listen to it.

Grobschnitt - “Solar Music Live”. One piece, appr. 55 mins straight up. (Very heavy on the compression, though.)

Early King Crimson. “Islands” is my favorite.

The first extended play song I can remember was the Rolling Stones Going Home about 1966. Remember we were limited to 20 minutes because it was on vinyl. I could only find the part 2 of the song on youtube.

The whole genre is my favorite. I’m a huge fan of early Genesis especially.

Have you ever heard of or seen The Musical Box? A Genesis tribute band from Canada, they perform faithful recreations of early Genesis concerts, right down to the costuming, theatrics, and stage banter ... check out the website:

The redhead likes “Tales From Topographic Oceans”.
The blonde likes “Close to the Edge”
The brunette likes “Relayer”

So which one is it???

What? No auburn who likes Fragile or The Yes Album ???

OK, can I date all four ... simultaneously? /grin
