Plus I've had to look at accident reports and photos from incidents including quadriplegia, paraplegia, near decapitations, legs off, faces smashed and testicles torn to shreds.

Me and mine
I ride a motorcycle every day to work, and have ridden 160,000 miles with no incidents. Good judgment and skill can and do minimize the risks. Motorcycling is a great sport and especially so because it can be combined with commuting. But yes, it is very dangerous and unforgiving and it is not for the foolish, uncoordinated, impatient, or reckless.
My co-worker was on a pleasant hike a couple of weeks ago, slipped, rolled down a hill for 50 feet then vertically for 10 feet onto a rock. He is out for months and cannot take care of himself. Hopefully he will recover fully. Several in our office have had bicycle crashes and injuries.

On my way to work this morning I had at least five times where some IDIOT in a car almost killed me.
Had it not been for my experience, honed riding skills and common safety sense., I would have been splatted.
I ride now because I am as near to death as I have ever been, I have MRSA, and fully expect that it will kill me eventually, (see tag line below for my philosophy on life) and ride because I'm going to die anyway, I'm just not is a rush to do so.
Yup, that's me.....just plain stupid. Over 200K lifetime miles by motorcycle, MSF certifications up the ying-yang and plenty of experience with idiots in cars and trucks that would just as soon see me dead than to spill some of that expensive latte' in their laps as that yack on their cell-phones. Must be my stupidity that's brought me this far.
I suppose you would say the same about our fighting forces that put themselves in harms way too. After all, that's a much more trauma-rich environment and we have a 100% volunteer force. Man, that must really boil your blood. What do you consider those folks? Stupid, or something worse?
I'll concede to you one thing - you have a masterful way of lumping 3.5 million people into one neat-little group that shows off your ignorance.
Maybe you should just wrap yourself in styrofoam and hide under the bed.

Yeah BL, 45,000 killed on highways each year...they aren’t all riding motorcycles.
I’m an old curmudgeon who has been riding motorcycles since 1946 and I’m still riding them...
Save your pontificating for your bar buddies and other worthies who care...
