Veterans: how many of you are offended by the peace symbol and why?

Offended by it? No. I find it rather silly, actually.
So you’re “FOR peace”? Is there anyone AGAINST peace?
It’s like saying you’re for puppies and butterflies.
Rather pointless.
Especially when the real world insists on intruding.

While I am not a veteran, my late father was a veteran of WWII. I absolutely HATE the peace symbol and have ever since I was in school in the late 60’s. The other thing that drives me crazy is the peace sign. Also I hate the word “cool”! Oh and while I’m on a roll, those guys who constantly whined and worried that they might lose their college deferments drove me crazy too! Most of them didn’t have a rich daddy either. Ok I now feel better!
Methinks His peace is not what the symbol advocates.
I was in Vietnam in ‘68/’69. I was 19 & 20 years old at the time. I am a combat-disabled vet. The symbol offended me a lot immediately after I got back. I equated it with cowardice. Today, I’m a little more tolerant.
The older I got, the more mellow (and hopefully wiser) I got. After reading all the history of “McNamara’s War” (including his), I just got mad. 58K American young men and women killed for nought. Countless thousands of others injured or maimed beyond repair. My friends...gone.
The politico’s and DOD wouldn’t let us win. Our only choice was to lose and leave. If I had met McNamara any time during the 80’s or 90’s, I’d have offed the bastard myself.
I consider the first Gulf War and the liberation of Iraq to be righteous conflicts. While noble, we’ll never win in Afghanistan. Nobody else has. We should pack up and leave them to the tribal wars they have been fighting for centuries.
I am now 60 years old and don’t want to see any more young men and women killed for nothing.
My uncle, who was an FBI agent during the 60s and 70s, found out the peace symbol was brought over from Britain and represents the semaphore signals for the letters N and D, which stood for Nuclear Disarmament espoused by Bertrand Russell and other like-minded academics. My uncle’s job was to find out who was funding the protests or the printing of publicity material and as we all know now, the KGB played a very significant role.

When a peacnik gives me the two fingered peace sign, my comeback is “Yeah, V for Victory”. That usually upsets them to the point, that they then give me a one fingered salute. I then explain to them that it isn’t necessary to share their IQ with us. That really makes them so mad, while flustering them to the point that they don’t know what to do.
Color me offended.
I always think of dirty, smelly hippies when I see it.

I veto’d a bunch of clothing purchases my wife was going to make on behalf of my 8 year old because of that symbol.
For me, it is the symbol of a movement that believes:

It’s an older symbol than that. It’s history was posted on a thread this morning but I can’t remember which one. I have a “leaky” brain.

It's not "upside-down", it indicates the direction chickens go when there's fighting to do.
That applies to the 60s/70s crowd anyway. In the current generation, it's mostly about ignorance.
PEACE, to be meaningful, must be the handmaiden of FREEDOM. A man’s body may be at peace in the absence of war, but his soul cannot be at peace in the absence of liberty.It's clearly obvious to me by reading this thread that people have not forgotten what it means, look at the article Spectre posted.
What are we suppose to think when we are reminded that even though freedom grants people to (fill in the blank), our first family uses a symbol that reminds us of the hate and cruelty against our Veterans?

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is an organization that advocates unilateral nuclear disarmament by Britain. It also campaigns for international nuclear disarmament and tighter international arms regulation through agreements such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It opposes military action that may result in the use of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and the building of nuclear power stations in the UK.
CND was formed in 1957 and has periodically been at the forefront of the peace movement in the United Kingdom over half a century. It claims to be Europe's largest single-issue peace campaign. Since 1958, it has organised the Aldermaston March, which is held over the Easter weekend from Trafalgar Square, London, to the Atomic Weapons Establishment near Aldermaston.
