138TH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP LIVE THREAD
http://www.opengolf.com ^ | 07/13/2009 | ROYAL AND ANCIENT GOLF CLUB

Posted on 07/13/2009 9:05:30 PM PDT by cleveland gop

Time for the year's 3rd major championship(already)and the only one of the 4 that is not played on this side of the Atlantic.

This year's event takes us to the west coastline of Scotland, to Royal Turnberry Golf Club where I'm sure the weather will have a lot to do with who wins and who doesn't win.

So what storyline is going to be written this time.....

Can Padraig win for the 3rd year in a row? Is Tiger going to tie his buddy Roger and win his 15th Major? Can Greg Norman turn the fountain of youth on again, but keep it on Sunday too and shock the world? Or do even bigger underdogs, like John Daly or David Duval revisit past glory? Or do stars like Paul Casey, Sergio, Ernie, Anthony Kim or others get the big prize come Sunday night?

Who do you think will hold the Claret Jug come Sunday??

Early weather forecast for the weekend, intermittent rain showers with highs in the low 60's.

Tiger tees off at 4:09AM EDT(9:09AM BST)on Thursday.

Oh dear the golfer who spoke at Obama’s inauguration misses the cut.

Nice play by 59-year old Tom Watson, Steve Marino and 49-year old Mark Calcavecchia. They are good guys who bring honor to golf. They do not throw clubs, spit on the greens, diss children asking for autographs or swear like a golfer who plays for Nike.

Hey, I only thought Tom would shoot 73 and still be in the mix. I don’t think anyone should be suprised that the lead scores are the same as yesterday. I’m actually shocked it didn’t drop 1 or 2 strokes.

we will all remember this round of 70 for a long time....

Yes he is and he’s a huge supporter of the military too.

That’s enough for me to give him more than a puncher’s chance....

WHY NOT??????? We saw what Greg did last year!!!!!

It should be a blast though to see what happens!!!!

The fact that Tiger had a rare fizzle and is out on a day where Watson not only held his own but regained a share in the lead is bound to be a big lift.

We have seen other events in the last ten years where Tom looks like he did in his youth for the first day and then immediatly fades. This time he looked strong FINISHING the SECOND day playing in his event on a course he loves with a couple of powerhouses out of the game.

It could be a Storybook weekend.

Lord Byron looks down from above.

I just watched PTI on ESPN and Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe made a comment that I suspect will generate some controversy. He said that if Watson won the Open it would be the absolute worst thing possible to happen to golf. Why? Because if one of golf's biggest events is won by a 60-year old man it could no longer be defended as a 'sport'. ....that if an old man can beat men in their prime, it's something other than a sport.

Ridiculous, I say.

pish tosh...golf is the great equalizer...when you hit good shots consistently, regardless of age you win.

FLOORED, I tell you...that Tiger didn’t make the cut!!

That knee surgery must have really messed up his head, swing etc.

Well, Tiger has won three tourneys on the PGA tour since coming back from surgery in March, so it appears his knee is just fine. I think people are reading way too much into this. He has missed a cut in a major before, and most likely it'll happen again. He's human, which comes as a great surprise to many. When the wind is blowing at Turnberry, things can get hairy even for the world's best.

Yeah, I know...I just look forward so much to seeing him play.

Back in 1992, I walked with him when he played the Western Open as an amateur, me an like ten other people...

Boob Ryan is an idiot and needs to be called out on this. I wonder if he said the same thing about Norman after being the 3rd round leader. I’m willing to bet not, especially since Greg’s still close to Bubba and of course wouldn’t warrant a pot shot.....

Now of course since Tom’s a big fan of the troops, has made several trips to Iraq and leans conservative, Bob thinks it’s OK to bash him. See it’s real simple. If Tom Watson is carrying his 6th Claret Jug come Sunday evening, it is one of the greatest acheivements in sport over the last 1/2 century.

Don’t read into anything negative against Norman. Sharkie is one of my all time favorites. I was just illustrating a point and I assume Ryan didn’t write the same thing last year.

Hello all!!! Thanks for joining in the thread. FOR THE MOST PART(hint, hint)we’ve stuck to the topic at hand and we are and could be witnessing possibly one of the watershed moments in all of sport certainly in my lifetime, definetly in the last 1/2 century.

Time for the latest weather courtesy of the network Al Roker’s show starts this Monday(aka The Weather Channel). Things haven’t changed much from yesterday. Tomorrow should bring mostly light rain during the day, a 60% chance becoming heavier and steady at night. Winds again a factor, NNW at 16 MPH. High 58, Low 51.

On Sunday the steady rain continues at a 70% chance with winds increasing to NNW at 22 MPH. High only 55, Low 51.

Play tomorrow begins at 8:20AM/BST, or 3:20AM on the East Coast. Our leaders, Tom Watson and Steve Marino go off at 3:00PM/BST, 10:00AM on the East Coast. TNT starts things, bright and early at 7:00AM/EDT with ABC taking over at 9:00AM.

I would imagine play beginning an hour earlier on Sunday, since TV starts an hour earlier, 6:00AM/EDT on TNT, 8:00AM on ABC. Remember folks, if there is a tie at the end of 72 holes, a 4-hole playoff is staged immediately afterwards. If a tie still exists, sudden death takes over......

I know what we’ve see so far has been pretty damn good. The fact that Tiger isn’t around for the weekend doesn’t eliminate the possibilities that are out there. Even though he won’t 3 peat, Padraig plays the weekend and hopefully well too. Plenty of star power out there with Furyk, Donald, Stricker, Garcia and others. John Daly, and the outfits making the cut(more on JD in a minute). Vijay and Jimenez lurking close by our leaders. And finally the almost AARP group in Mark Calcavecchia and Tom Watson join Steve Marino at the top.

Now I don’t know about ya’ll, but imagine Tom is again terrific and is maybe -4 walking off 18 green. He turns to the big yellow scoreboard and sees that’s at the top of the pack. He also sees one other name at the top with him, after shooting a best of the day 66, John Daly will be in the final game with Tom Watson come 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

Before you think that’s impossible. Think about what we’ve seen so far and then tell me it isn’t more than reasonable to think this happens.....

Play well boys, all 75 who made the cut......

Oh, one last thing. Mark Calcavecchia is a noted Democrat on tour. Maybe we should bash him like the number 1 golfer in the world gets trashed by a certain.....you get the point. I’m not going to bash. I hope he plays well tomorrow. I’ve seen him play enough times in person to know he’s a pretty good guy that many on tour respect. There, nuff said.....

we will all remember this round of 70 for a long time....

Especially bogies on 5 out of the first seven...would be easy to pack it in after that...but to come back and shoot 70..WOW! And on a day Tiger misses the cut....what a day...:o)

FOR THE MOST PART(hint,hint)

Very sad your pathetic little troll doesn't know the difference between speaking at an inauguration and a festivity where he supported our military. One can be happy that during our lifetime a man of color was elected president and still disagree with his politics. How dull would our life be we could only be entertained by those whom we only agreed with politically. Not surprised she got kicked off the Rush and Levin threads by the Mods for her immature trolling. Bet she's the only one living in her parent's basement with nothing else to do.

Good point. I overlooked the political angle. ...and Ryan is certainly a vocal lib. Wouldn’t surpise me at all if the motivation for his mindless rant were political.

32 on the back 9 for Tom Terrific. In those conditions that may be the best stat of all.

Good morning, anyone need coffee?

The morning tee times are on the course...overcast and windy

Are allowed to discuss scores and positions if people are DVR’ing??

Gotta cut grass today, find some clean laundry?
