However, as far as pump shotguns go, the 500 is one of the more dependable. The Maverick is still a cheap and undependable piece of junk. It is very cheaply made and that is how they achieve such a low price point. I am not a gun snob. Just a gunsmith who calls it like I see it.
P.S. Every gunsmith that I know, who actually makes a living at it has these same opinions, based on experience.

The problem for me is that you didn't know about the changeover for the Maverick that was made 19 years ago which was the basis for your major criticism and your continued criticism of it doesn't match what I find on the gun forums, the Maverick is highly respected and many of them claim to be gunsmiths. The plastic parts passed the original military tests that the 870 still can't pass and Mossberg only replaced them when the military changed their requirements.

The military has ordered tens of thousands of the economical Mossbergs and I guess none of the 870s.

The Navy has ordered 10’s of thousands of the updated and more expensive 590’s, without the plastic trigger groups and safety. They are no more economical than an 870.

Over 80,000 different firearms have been manufactured in the last 150 years. No one knows everything about all of them. No one. With that said, the Maverick is a cheapened pump gun that I would highly recommend not staking your life on.

P.S. Gun forums are a lot like life: Lots of folks with lots of opinions that vary widely.

Gotta love the old vintage shotguns. I still use my grandfather’s 1923 Parker 12 gauge (2 triggers) for Duck Hunting.

I hope you’re not shooting steel out of it.

For years the military bought the plastic version the plastic version was the only shotgun to pass the military standard, it was only when the standard was updated that Mossberg started using the metal parts.

The cost per unit is $316.00 dollars, whether the 870 is the same price is moot, it has never been able to pass either the older military standard or the newer one.

Good, there seems to be no shortage of folks who think it’s ok to do so.

Of course FReepers are smarter than that.

Great video. My first attempt at disassembly went sort of like this - remove barrel, cuss, shake the dang thing until something falls out, scoop out the rest, clean it, call a gunsmith.

Well, I got the dang thing clean, anyhows... :-(

You don't know how many "bags of parts" that used to be weapons I've had to put back together.

When I asked what happened. The answer is usually along the 'I saw a pin and knocked it out and the whole thing just fell apart.'

My Maverick 88 was made in the early ‘90s, and it has dual action arms. The Mossberg 500s had single arms once upon a time, too. I once owned a 1965-vintage gun with a single (highly flexible and sticky) arm.

Ruger Mark 1...shudder! I stripped my dad's Ruger once, "just too see how it works".

I got a whuppin' for my trouble. He didn't know how to put it back together, either. ;-)

Both the Maverick and 500 had single arms at one time. Heck, every Maverick I’ve seen had a single arm. Was enlightened on this thread that they had a second added.
