An All-Star meeting: Musial and Pujols
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | July 12, 2009 | Rick Hummel

Stan Musial, the greatest Cardinal of them all, met up with Albert Pujols, the greatest Cardinal of now and perhaps of a very long time, for an All-Star photo session one day recently.

Between the photo clicks, the picture that emerged was one of two St. Louis baseball icons from different eras with an admiration for each other. They traded tips on hitting, joked about their salaries and golf games and showed appreciation for a baseball bat as only two sluggers of their stature could.

Musial, who appeared in 24 All-Star Games and is expected to play a key role in Tuesday's pre-game ceremony, was asked point-blank if Pujols was the greatest Cardinal since himself.

"Sure," he said.

Musial, a few months shy of 89 years old now. . . .

Thanks. I’ve never been a Cardinals fan (Red Sox all the way), but Pujols is a talent who comes along once a generation. He’s the most exciting ballplayer today....

reminds me of another story and I can’t remember who told it, might have been Joe G. on the rubber chicken circuit but the story goes a second stringer sat down in the dugout before a game said to Stan “boy I slept good, bacon was fantastic at breakfast, I feel like a million bucks today in fact I feel so good I feel like I’m gonna get three hits today, you ever feel like that Stan?” “everyday” was the reply.

Stan was my childhood sports hero -—before TV—and I lived in SE Texas. We only had pictures in the “News” shorts they showed at the “picture show.” Of course, back then kids could read so the newspaper was a source of info.

Thanks for the post. I am a life-long Cardinal fan and remember not only Musial, but Wally Moon and Joe Cunningham. I still follow the cards on DirecTv and XM radio when I can.

One thing all this steroids garbage has affirmed with me and my family is that kids and adults should not adulate professional athletes. It’s great they can hit long home runs and score TDs, but that does not make anyone fireproof. Adoring these people blindly leads to almost certain disappointment. Enjoy their talents, but look elsewhere for role models.
