ST. LOUIS - Many of the 400-plus pit bulls seized in multistate dogfighting raids appear happy in their new digs at a temporary shelter in St. Louis, where one volunteer described them wagging their tails in seeming gratitude for newfound human contact. But animal welfare officials say it may be hard to find the dogs permanent sanctuary.
Fair or not, the stigma attached to the American Pit Bull Terrier, coupled with the sheer number of those seized this week in federal raids in at least seven states will hurt their chances of adoption, animal welfare groups say.
Unlike the dogs taken from NFL star Michael Vick's BadNewz Kennels, the roughly 450 pit bulls being kept at shelters in several states have no celebrity owners to pay for their upkeep. Vick, who pleaded guilty to operating a dogfighting ring in August 2007, was ordered by a court to pay nearly $1 million for his dogs' care.
The raids this week resulted in the arrests of 26 men, who face federal criminal charges related to dogfighting in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas.
The pit bulls' seizure comes as U.S. shelters are inundated with abandoned dogs and cats, 3.7 million of which are euthanized each year because they can't find homes.

American Pit Bull Terrier
Seize everything the perps own, which probably includes some land where they were operating their disgusting activities, and put it all into a trust for the care of the dogs.
...brain shots, backhoe, large pit—no more wasted money on those particular, typical pets of drug addicts.
Cut off their nads, remove their teeth and claws. The ones that are incapable of obedience should be put down. They say that pitbulls are usually very devoted to one person and will do anything for that person. everyone else is the enemy. So with teeth and claws gone, they should be able to make a good pet for someone.
Four legged steel-trap jawed killing machines - who needs em?
Hey wait a second - that also describes the current wave of murderous coyotes extending their range east.
How ‘bout a dogfight arena takin’ bets on a pit bull vs. coyote death duel - sell like hotcakes, yeah?
how did chet99 miss this story?
Roger Dat!,,,
They grabbed a bunch of em’ just over the Texas line near
me,,,(local news)
I was hopin’ they would haul this mess off next to us,,,
No luck yet...
yep, agreed and I hope the FR contingent of the “you guys are all wrong about these dogs’ show up on this thread. it could make for some interesting back and forth.
Its too bad about PitBulls, they are about doomed as doomed can be. Long ago had a very sweet half Pit/half Boxer, looked just like Petey on Lil Rascals, very intelligent, very obedient who never had any aggression toward any person, another dog was another story.
This is the untold story, every time there is a mass rescue of dogs from somewhere, twice as many are silently put down without fanfare.
A local black guy who is in the know about the Panola County, Texas dog fighters, says he has seen Vick there several times to fight his dogs. Amazing that Vick gets out of the Fed Poky on very short term and all of a sudden the big busts start. Who would ever thought there was no honor among dog fighters?????

TANKS for the info,,,
I never thought about that but I bet it’s true!

“They say that pitbulls are usually very devoted to one person and will do anything for that person. everyone else is the enemy. “
Who is “they”? Pit bulls are not a guardian breed, and were absolutely never bred to be suspicious of people. Because of this, they are one of the most stolen breeds of dog. Some breeders have been known to get another breed to guard their pit bulls. Sounds silly, but for as many years as they bred them to fight dogs, they also bred them to be human submissive so the handlers would not be attacked if they had to grab the dogs during a fight. That is why in a huge raid hundreds of these dogs are being carried away while wagging their tails and trying to lick the workers.
I agree about cutting the nads, as most dogs are not fit to be bred and have less aggression and behavior issues when neutered, but taking away teeth and claws because “they” say the dogs are evil is just cruel. The dogs have had enough cruelty already, don’t you think?
Put them all down then. I don’t really care what happens to them.
Yep, put them down, kill them all, the stupid pet lovers will adopt them out to family only to have thier children or somebody else attacked and killed.
That’s why I suggested removing their teeth.
You DO realize that there are literally MILLIONS of pit bulls that are alive today that haven’t attacked anyone, and what you see on the news is the smallest minority?
The only stupid pet lovers around are the ones that are irresponsible enough to let their pets run loose, breed, and become problems from lack of socialization or exposure to real life.
It isn’t like the dogs won’t be temperament tested and adopted out to people who have had criminal background checks, home checks, and I am sure, lots of questions asked to test their knowledge of the breed. They may decide to adopt only to people without other dogs, without children, or with all of the above. Just because a dog has been trained and forced to fight other dogs doesn’t mean that it WANTS to do so. It also has nothing to do with human aggression, and many times the dogs taken from such places are extremely human-submissive.
I am just so amazed that literally zero research has been done by people wanting to kill all the dogs, other than googling pit bull attack, as if anyone could call that research. Laziness and ignorance is why people get attacked. Otherwise, the Bloodhound would not have been in the same situation as a “vicious dog” in the 1800’s.
