[At
July 11, 1939] twenty Radar stations were in existence between Portsmouth and Scapa Flow, able to detect aircraft flying above ten thousand feet, with ranges varying from fifty to a hundred and twenty miles. A satisfactory anti-jamming device and a simplified method of I.F.F. [Identification Friend or Foe] were now actually in production. Flight trials were taking place with experimental sets in aircraft to try to home on enemy machines. The experimental sets for the location of ships from the air had proved too bulky for air-service purposes, and were passed to the Admiralty for possible use by ships.
