CYBERsitter Stolen by Chinese
The Peoples Republic of China's mandated Green Dam Internet filtering software contains significant portions of CYBERsitter!
About three weeks ago we discovered that a Chinese software program called Green Dam - Youth Escort contains pirated code and data from CYBERsitter. Green Dam is a software product supposedly designed to protect kids in China from objectionable and potentially harmful content on the Internet, much like CYBERsitter does. There are a couple of significant differences however. The first is that is also blocks politically and socially sensitive information like Tibet, Democracy, Taiwan independence, and religious material. The second difference is that it is required to be installed on every computer sold in China. This includes computers manufactured here in the US. It is hard to believe, but the Green Dam software contains a great deal of CYBERsitter code including all of our filters. We have worked hard on our filters over the last 15 years, and the Chinese developers felt it was ok to simply steal them and include them in their own product. Many of the screens in Green Dam are virtually identical to CYBERsitter's, except in Chinese. To date, Green Dam has been installed on over 55 million Chinese computers, and some companies like Sony, Acer, and Lenovo are already including this illegally copied software on computers shipped to China. Other major companies like HP and Dell will probably follow suit soon.
In terms of units shipped, this is likely one of the largest thefts of intellectual property in computing history. There has been a tremendous amount of news and television coverage on this, and we have set up a Twitter account to help our friends and customers keep up with the latest developments. If you have a Twitter account, be sure to follow us! This is an interesting story and it is far from over. And, we need lots of "friends" so these guys know our customers support our efforts to stop the distribution of Green Dam, and the continued oppression of the Chinese people.
Speaking of Twitter, we are going to be offering some new Twitter toys that will be free to CYBERsitter users. This will include a kid friendly Twitter program that will clean up any objectionable messages before your kids see them. We will announce them on Twitter, so be sure to sign up. While you're at it, check out our Facebook page and be our "friend" there too!
