She was charged with desecrating a flag and disturbing the peace. However, the last time we checked burning a flag was still legal in the United States, so that charge probably wouldn't hold up if pursued.

One of the commenters at the website cited the Maryland legal statute under which flag desecration is prohibited. I'm not sure about his claim though. Nonetheless, lighting a flag on fire while standing between two lanes of traffic on a bridge has got to be a violation of something!

Our whole base (including a lot of coalition troops) turned out on a 120 degree ramp two hours ago to watch three caskets covered by the American flag loaded into a C-130 for the trip home.

I like the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) Article 117, Provoking Speech and Gestures.

Seems to me, lots of folks would be more polite and thoughtful, if civilians could invoke Article 117. This persons actions, to me, would be Provoking Speech and Gestures (not free speech) and a swift kick in the behind would be an appropriate response. (sarcasm)
