LANCASTER [California] - Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 43-year-old man who died at a hospital several hours after deputies shocked him with a electronic device to subdue him following a traffic accident.

A Sheriff's Department Headquarters Bureau spokesman said the man is not believed to have died from the Taser shock.

Identified by Los Angeles Coroner's officials as Raynard Jensen Davis, he was described by deputies as about 6 feet tall and weighing about 400 pounds.

Coroner officials said autopsy and toxicology tests were pending to determine what killed Davis.

Deputies said the man died at Antelope Valley Hospital about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, approximately 11 hours after deputies shot him with a Taser, which sends out an electrical charge designed to incapacitate a person by affecting the peripheral nervous system. Spokesman Bill Brauberger of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said the man had acted aggressively toward firefighters and deputies when they tried talking to him.

He said the Taser had "little or no effect" on Davis. Deputies then physically restrained and handcuffed him, Brauberger said.

A fire spokesman said Monday two people were transported to Antelope Valley Hospital, one of them handcuffed, as a result of the crash.

Brauberger said the man who later died was taken to a hospital and admitted for "reasons unrelated to the contact with deputies," but the reasons were not specified.

wonder why all of those men didn’t just physically restrain him first instead of using the taser since the article states that is just what they did after the taser had no effect.

400 pounds? I think he might have had some other problems.

How about this was fatso’s choice and had he not been a jerk he could be eating a cream pie today.

Our public servants are not paid to wrestle every time some idiot decides to act out.

Besides, the good guys might have received carbon credit for this one.

Wait a minute here.

”Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the death...after deputies shocked him with a electronic device”

Kinda like have the foxes investigate the theft of chickens from the chicken coop by other foxes?

Cops got along fine without tasers 20 years ago.
