VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 4 (UPI) -- A brutal gang war is being waged in and around Vancouver as the Canadian city prepares for the 2010 Winter Olympics, authorities say.
Jim Chu, the chief police constable in Vancouver, said at least 18 young people have been killed in 2009 to date in gangland violence, including attacks in broad daylight, the Chicago Tribune reported online Saturday.
"Let's get serious. There is a gang war, and it's brutal. What we have seen are new rules of engagement for the gangsters," Chu said.
Pat Fogarty of British Columbia's Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit said the increased gang violence in metropolitan Vancouver is likely connected to the ongoing drug cartel clash in Mexico.
"The war in Mexico directly impacts on the drug trade in Canada ... . There's a complete disruption of the flow of cocaine into Canada, and we are seeing the result," he told the Tribune.
Authorities told the U.S. publication the main violence in the area appears to be between two rival gangs, the Red Scorpions and the United Nations criminal organization.

Here I thought the Red Scorpions and the UN were the same thing.
They felt sympathy and admiration for the group of thugs in New York?
just wait until the hookers start coming in for the olympics!
There's a war in Mexico? No one told me. /sarc
Imagine that ya liberals loony tunes!!
It probably is the “United Nations” just a special branch.
Rumble with the United Nations: switchblades versus documents
I’m rooting for the Scorpions. They had some good songs in the 80’s.
If it weren’t for risk to innocents, I’d say: “Why interrupt?” Let them kill each other and be done with it.
My wife and daughter are vacationing in Vancouver right now. They are staying with her brother who lives about 5 miles from the airport. They climbed Grouse Mountain, visited Whistler, Lynn Canyon, Stanley Park, and a few other places. I have not heard about any crime problems from them. All I hear is how expensive Vancouver is.
gee, from watching the Canadian media I thought your only chance of getting caught in gang-war crossfire was to cross the border into the US....(former Calgary Flame Hakan Loob was so fearful of “US violence” that he retired from hockey rather than accept a trade to a US-based team)
“Jim Chu”? Really? The police Chief’s name is “Jim Shoe”???
C’mon, not even in Canaduh...
Red Scorpions, huh?
From what I can tell, they appear to be some type of Transformer type contraptions.

The Vancouver Police are gonna have their hands full.
“I wonder how the group was inspired to call itself the ‘United Nations’?”
The gang leaders may actually be smarter than most Canadians and Americans, recognizing that the UNO is a criminal organization; a gang.
Canada may no longer be "The Great White North"?
Vancouver — just another liberal city - like Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, etc. in the states. Where liberalism abounds, so does crime and gangs and gang wars.
Give the USA time, we’ll catch up now that we have the liberals in charge, they prefer criminals to law and order.
