A top Symantec executive has hit out at free antivirus software, including Microsofts Microsoft Security Essentials, warning consumers that it wont be enough to keep them safe.
Speaking to BLORGE, David Hall, Symantecs Product Manager Asia-Pacific Consumer Products and Solutions said that free antivirus software isnt able to keep up with full-price suites like those offered by Symantec.
If you are only relying on free antivirus to offer you protection in this modern age, you are not getting the protection you need to be able to stay clean and have a reasonable chance of avoiding identity theft, he said.
Hall also dismissed Microsofts Microsoft Security Essentials offering (which is currently in Beta) as an incomplete solution.
Microsofts free product is basically a stripped down version of the OneCare product Microsoft pulled from retail shelves, he said.
Consumers dont need less protection, they need more.

hmmm only virus i ever got was when using symantec product
Avast! is better than AVG
I got a virus while running a virus software program. They tried to get rid of me and blame my computer manufacturer then finally admitted that there product was at fault. I got an upgrade, a free year’s worth and technical support to restore my machine. Left a very bad taste.
I use a Mac 95% of the time, and have AVG installed on my WinPC. So far, it has worked well.

I’m starting to think that Symantec works by tying up system resources to such an extent that a virus simply can’t run.
yes I had avg it slowed me down avast does not
Symantec is like Chemo, it kills the viruses, but it takes everything else with it.
Yeah, Norton crapped up my machine something fierce. And their Indian support supervisor claimed (erroneously according to the hundreds of other Corel users that could no longer open Corel after removing Norton) that my issues had nothing to do with their software and too bad.
Try getting rid of Norton to install something else properly. I had to crawl through my registry manually to get rid of stuff from Norton that they don’t even mention in their uninstall procedures. Major pain. Never again.
Symantec’s model as a business is dead for the most part, they need to adapt or be taken out by smarter businesses.
For home and SOHO use, free antivirus is the best option. I've used AVG, Avast, and Avira and like them all and they've been very effective.
Has been for me. AVG was decent until an upgrade turned my computer into molasseses.
I’ll take my chances with Avast.
Self-serving marketing ping
Thanks, David, bite me. A few years back your antivirus program sure did a bang-up job of protecting me against the Blaster Worm, didn’t it?
BINGO!!!
