You are both very welcome.

The study of Irish History is one of my hobbies.

Naturally, they settled down and married Irish girls. Their progeny were often dark-skinned and had dark curly hair, and were called affectionately “Black Irish”. (I am descended from these on my mother’s side.)

Wasn't Phil Lynott of "Thin Lizzy" Black Irish?

A college buddy once told me he could’ve made a stop in Memphis on a road trip. One look at that place and he kept right on driving. The natives looked real hostile.

What make these cities dangerous? More dangerous than La, Detroit, Washington D.C., Chicago, New York, New Jersey?

Nashville is generally safe if you stay out of the rough neighborhoods. Downtown Nashville in the area he was shot is very safe. There are lots of upscale condos that are well patrolled. I doubt this was a random act of violence.

I wouldn’t compare Nashville to Memphis.

I wouldn't either. I've been to Nashville several times and never felt unsafe. I spent the night in Memphis once and it was the last time. Awful place! I've lived in TN all my life and Memphis is the only place I felt seriously unsafe. I live halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga and since I'm a small town girl I don't really care for any large city but I don't feel like my life is in danger when I go to Nashville, Knoxville or Chattanooga.

We made a trip out West 20 years ago and passed through Memphis on the way home. Of course we got lost. Finally, at 2:00am, we decided to stay the night. I don't know where in Memphis we were but we heard gun shots all through the night. When they weren't shooting up the place, sirens were running. We were up and out of there by daylight. It was bad 20 years ago so I can only imagine how bad it is now.

If they want to give it to Arkansas I won't complain. We'd get rid of a boat load of libs.

WSMV-TV in Nashville has done some investigative reporting. The condo complex where McNair and the young woman were found is owned by Charlie Cardwell, a well known Nashville trustee. Cardwell rented this particular unit to Wayne Neely, who is a salesman at Nashville Sporting Goods, a sporting goods company that has been in Nashville for many years. The condo was apparently used for business/entertainment because it was empty for weeks at a time according to Cardwell. Neely let Steve McNair stay at the condo when he came into town to work on his new restaurant Gridiron-9. The restaurant has only been open a few weeks in the Tennessee State University area.

If you ever start a thread on that let me know please!

I have Irish ancestors and I’ve always found that fascinating.

I’m not that familiar with either city but thought the comparison wasn’t justified. And, if this was as reported, a murder/suicide attempt, then it’s not a function of crime in the city but of a lunatic girlfriend. Horrible in any case. Prayers for Steve McNair and his family.

NYC has a reputation for being unsafe but that hasn’t been true for a long time. In fact it is the safest of the 25 biggest cities in the US.

Memphis is the only place I felt seriously unsafe

Interesting you should say that. My daughter has backpacked through much of Asia by herself, traveled in central America by herself, all between the ages of 17 - 21. She was with SFPF for a while so she knows guns and self defense. She and I did a road trip when she moved from SF to Louis, stopping for a night in Memphis. She said that she felt more unsafe and uncomfortable there than anywhere else she had ever been.

That was exactly my feeling. I didn't sleep a wink all night. We had a chair pushed against the door and a pistol on the nightstand. We drove 4,000 miles round trip that vacation and stayed in a lot of places. I was never afraid until Memphis.
