Are there any Louisvillians/Kentuckianians on board?

Posted on 07/04/2009 10:55:25 AM PDT by LouAvul

My lovely beloved likes fireworks displays. I've told her about Thunder over Louisville and want her to see it.

I'm looking for a hotel room in full view of the display, preferably w/a balcony overlooking the Ohio.

It could be either on the Kentucky or Indiana side, but all the hotels I can find on the net require leaving the room and fighting the traffic.

Any suggestions?

Thunder Over Louisville has already happened for this year. It's a part of the Derby festivities not July 4th.

Not that this is much help, but I recall a fairly nice high rise hotel right on the river, close to the interstate bridge, going from the airport into Indiana. It was one of the better chains, as best I can remember.

I have good friend from Frankfort but alas, she’s not a freeper. I’ll have to ask her about fireworks in Frankfort.

I’d be shocked if you find a vacancy with a riverfront view. Those places are sold out years in advance for Thunder.

Good luck with trying, though. The only places I know off the top of my head are in Louisville - The Galt House and The Galt House East

Thunder is in April.Usually the 3rd Saturday.

Galt house is the only way to go if you want to watch from the balcony...End rooms are probably priced out the wazoo.

There are hotels on the Southern Indiania side of the river that may be a better deal.

The Galt House is the only hotel I remember that would have the view you need. You’ll need to ask for a room on the southeast side. There may be more high rise hotels now. I moved away from Louisville in 1988.

Yes, I'm aware it's a part of Derby week. I was born in Louisville but haven't been back since my father passed.

I'm looking to make a reservation several years in advance.
