Need some techie help pls . fellow Freepers. I have an XP Media HP laptop 2006 1.6 GB 2006. The laptop keeps attempting to boot up, the power is on but it wont just go to the XP /os start up,,,(the past 20 minutes now)
the solution pls especially how to access the laptop drive because it looks like I will have to reboot this laptop completely with the recovery disks BUT I dont want to unless neccessary. And there's some info that I need to get to especially the hard drive.
Expert and intermediate suggestions and solutions pls..
Your board is toast. Pull the drive and put into an external enclosure. I will bet everything is still there.
I hate rebuilding or new computers but, it is like a car. sometimes it has to be replaced period.
Again, try putting it in the freezer and see if you can get 10 minutes or so out of it.
good call on the memory.
What model is it? I had this happen to an HP dv9005 and my wife’s Compaq F500. Both machines were out of warranty, but HP had issued a service bulletin authorizing free repair to both models. Turns out that the fan algorithm in the bios was incorrect and the resulting lack of proper cooling cooked components on the motherboard—at least that’s what HP said. The problems started on the DV about a year after I bought it: First the screen hinges cracked, then the card reader died, then the wireless died and finally the video card fried, resulting in the black screen you also seem to have. The upshot is that HP fixed both machines for free, including the shipping, and I haven’t had problems with either since. The DV was returned to me in December, the other one about three months ago. Both now run fine, and both run a lot cooler. Check the HP website for the repair bulletin. First time(s) I ever had problems with HP products, and I’ve bought nothing but for eight years.
Oh yeah, and the cure was new mobos for both.
A Hewlett Packard, huh? I bought a brand new one. It lasted for 6 months; then it died. I’m out 1,000 bucks.
Bookmark. Having same problem with a laptop. Read after vacation.
In addition to the obvious power source(s), there is a small, replacable battery on the mother board. The battery is used to keep time when the computer is off. My recommendation: disconnect the computer from its power source (for safe disassembly), replace the battery, reconnect the power and attempt to start. It’s an inexpensive and relatively easy procedure. It worked for me when I had a similar problem with my HP this year.
I have an ancient Dell that occasionally cannot find the boot drive.
The solution is to slide out the hard drive and then thwap it back into position.
Good Idea freezing it could shift a bad solder point or other type of connection.
If it worked for a few moments then at least you would have some sort of confirmation of heat caused resitance somewhere.
I would visually look at it and if I don't see anything I would yank the drive as you said because its probably still good and put it in an enclosure or dock as some call it.
Sell the computer as broken w/o hard drive on Ebay (People like me buy them)buy another comp (Not an HP)from NewEgg. Retrieve data from old hard drive.
Probably not worth taking to shop.
Just pull the drive. Go to Best Buy and get something else.
I went in two months to pick another Sony VAIO for $1,800. They didn’t have the one I wanted so asked if they had anything comparable in terms of features.
They should me the Dell Studio 17 which happened to be on sale for $699.
Saved $1000 and the only thing I don’t care for is the screen. Sony has a better screen but, whatever, it does everything the other one was going to do.
I sent my HP laptop to their Memphis repair center FOUR times within 9 months which is (was) unacceptable. I never even look at HP’s when I’m shopping for a laptop.
