Amur tigers on 'genetic brink'
BBC ^ | 7/02/09 | Matt Walker

The world's largest cat, the Amur tiger, is down to an effective wild population of fewer than 35 individuals, new research has found.

Although up to 500 of the big cats actually survive in the wild, the effective population is a measure of their genetic diversity.

That in turn is a good predictor of the Amur tiger's chances of survival.

The results come from the most complete genetic survey yet of wild Amur tigers, the rarest subspecies of tiger.

Send that pelt to me for safe disposal.

It is for your own good, I tell you.

Beautiful, majestic animals. Our previous home zoo had one they bred. The two young produced were adorable. It was a great treasure to watch them grow.

Not to worry — something will evolve to fill its ecological niche.

Who (pray, tell) would want to kill such a magnificent beast?
The coats look much better on the animal, not on the floor or wall.

Someone on the other end of those teeth and claws coming at them with death on the mind of the Tiger. Tigers are the second biggest man eaters among big cats, that is why most people have hunted them to near extinction in the areas they are native to. The only cat that kills and eats humans more often than tigers is the leopard, in particular the Indian leopard. Lions come in a distant third. I would kill a tiger in a minute if I lived where they live. I don't fancy being a tiger snack and I wouldn't want my children to be eaten either.

I guess if I lived where they do, I’d carry a BIG handgun.
And I’m familiar with the man-eating propensities of big cats.

But thanks for your input.

We went to the Akron Zoo today. There was a tiger sleeping in the shade, and Hubby and I were watching it when it woke up and stared at me. I gave it a “kitty kiss” (narrowing eyes while staring back), and it gave me one back. I have been walking on air ever since.
