Cat's Beating Death Triggers Protest (man killed cat after it scratched him)

BOSTON -- The beating death of a cat in front of shocked children prompted protests Sunday in Worcester.

A group of people gathered in front of the city police department, demanding police put Tom Foley behind bars.

Foley admittedly beat a cat named Lily to death in front of several children on Friday.

The owner, Lisa Tuttle, said her cat Lily had just given birth to a litter of kittens and may have been feeling territorial when she charged Foley's dog and scratched Foley several days earlier on Dupuis Avenue.

"I just came out. I saw the cat in a pool of blood, my daughter screaming," neighbor Lisa Tuttle said. Witnesses said at least one adult and four horrified children saw Foley beat the cat to death with a stick.

[Lisa Tuttle, cat's owner] Lisa Tuttle, cat's owner More "I think it's an awful crime that he did it in front of kids. I think it shows his lack of humanity. I think that these kids are going to be traumatized," protest organizer Jaqueline Corliss said.

Foley, of Stoneham Road in Worcester, claimed he was defending himself from the seven-pound cat.

He has not been charged.

The College of Holy Cross put Foley on paid leave from his job as a public safety officer.

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals law enforcement department is actively investigating the incident and asked any witnesses to any animal cruelty to contact them directly at: 617-522-6008 or 800-628-5808.

Animal cruelty is a felony in Massachusetts punishable by a fine up to $2,500 and up to five years in prison.

I would suggest you don’t waste your time with the cat lady A PERSON OF FACT & LOGIC. You will come out looking and smelling like you wrestled with a pig.

....as you should.... :)

Unless the cat is pregnant, has babies, has rabies or is cornered—fearing for it’s life.....the cat naturally flees...not attacks.

LOL. You didn’t meet these three cats. ;-)

The puppy was so cute and friendly. It was white with black spots. They named it Spot, of course. The cats were named Satan, Lucifer, and Beelzebub. (I’m not kidding.) Because even the owners could see these cats were mean.

Later, they had two more cats who were sweet and cuddly. But not the other three...

Now Fawn, we never agreed that these discussions involved FACT & LOGIC. You may have, but it wasn’t reciprocal. ;-)

And yes, there were a few times I smelled and looked like it and learned my lesson(s).

Try to keep things in perspective.

I hope you have a Happy 4th of July.
Regards,

SZ

“What are we talking about here, a toy chihuahua?”

Toy Chihuahuas charge; they do not retreat.

(That is the case in my home, where a 3.5 pound little guy runs the show with three adult humans and two adult cats.)

“Anyone who would beat a cat to death over being scratched and/or it “charging” his dog, has something very very wrong with them.”

He seems to be a security guard; a want-to-be tough guy.

> Lets make this as clear as possible. I don’t agree with your proposal that 10 years is the just punishment for the offense. I know you love your dogs, but 10 years is crazy. I don’t care if he beat it the middle of the town square.

Ok, so what do you feel would be an appropriate sanction for beating somebody’s pet cat to death in front of children? What sentence wouldn’t be “crazy”?

> You make it sound like he just rang their doorbell and invited a film crew before killing it.

I don’t know any more about the circumstances than what you’ve gleaned from the story. But I don’t see too many shades of grey. Beating a pet cat to death is sick behavior. Doing it in front of kids (irrespective of how the kids got involved) is a serious aggravating factor. I don’t see many reasons to ameliorate a sentence of, say, ten years. Perhaps mental illness...

Yes, that is alot of time; and yes, it was “only a cat”. But any sick b@stard that could do that to a cat, in front of children, surely places little or no value on life. Society is therefore safer having that person behind bars, away from the rest of us. Tough punishment, sure: it’s very tough and I don’t care. He really ought to be strung up by the nuts and left to twist in the wind. Unfortunately we do not live in the Dark Ages, so ten years in the slammer is the worst we can do to them.

> What did I do, I knocked on their door, told them that if it came out in the street again I would beat it’s skull in. They moved. I really could care less it that offends you or not.

A roaming dog that bites is a serious public safety concern. It cannot be compared with a biting/scratching pet cat: it is a much bigger risk capable of doing much more serious damage. Off to the pound with it if possible, or kill it humanely if not: particularly if it is in the act of attacking someone. That doesn’t offend me at all. And I really couldn’t care less if it offends you either.

Mmm...that’s irrelevant. The pet owner is ultimately responsible for their animals whether they were let out, kicked out or escaped.

It’s not irrelevant....yes, for every 4th generation feral cat-—it is ultimately the result of a irresponsible human. My point was not to blame the cats for running loose if they ran away or were born to a cat that ran away. It’s no reason to kill them.

There is a difference between PETS and animals raised for food.
