Replacement of a battery which has been consumed via normal use is not covered under warranty.
I didn't take anything out of context, that was a quote from Apples website.
Failure during normal usage of these batteries would be covered for one year. It would probably be abnormal usage if it fails within the one year.
This point was covered by Apple several years ago on its warranty statement on user-replaceable batteries. Essentially, consumed (depleted) means that the battery will no longer hold a charge in a NORMAL usage pattern. IF the battery fails for other than being consumed in a normal usage pattern, it will be replaced, during the warranty period of the computer.
While you probably could consume one of these batteries in less than a year (there are 1251.43 seven hour periods in a year), the system will keep records of the number of charge/discharge cycles the battery has experienced.
If it no longer holds an 80% charge at less than the 1000 cycle point, then it WILL be replaced, if it still under a warranty. If the failure of the 80% charge hold is after the 1000 cycle point, the normal use expectation, it will NOT be covered.

Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your replacement coverage for a defective battery to three years from the date of your notebook purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan. However, the AppleCare Protection Plan for notebook computers does not cover batteries that have failed or are exhibiting diminished capacity except when the failure or diminished capacity is the result of a manufacturing defect. Apple offers a battery replacement service for MacBook Air and all MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries. You can purchase replacement batteries for late models of Apple notebooks directly from the Apple Store.
I researched this back in January and found that the battery warranty policy has not changed in 15 years. It is also essentially the same for other companies.
