In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
periphrasis \puh-RIFF-ruh-sis\ noun
1: use of a longer phrasing in place of a possible shorter form of expression
2: an instance of periphrasis *
* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
The college English teacher warned her students against padding their essays with periphrases solely to reach the required length.
Did you know?
It's easy enough to point out the origins of "periphrasis": the word was borrowed into English in the early 16th century via Latin from Greek "periphrazein," which in turn comes from the prefix "peri-," meaning "all around," and the verb "phrazein," "to point out." Two common descendants of "phrazein" in English are "phrase" and "paraphrase," the latter of which combines "phrazein" with the prefix "para-," meaning "closely resembling." Another "phrazein" descendant is the less familiar word "holophrasis," meaning "the expression of a complex of ideas in a single word or in a fixed phrase." (The prefix "holo-" can mean "completely.")
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Exactly. Remember how Hillary did not want pity either and how she was obviously disgusted by her husband’s antics when they became public knowledge.
The big diff is hill did not cut the bubbaloon loose, no matter how egregious his sins. i don’t see jenny hanging on to this pathetic loser after this week’s ridiculous blathering to the media about soulmates and love stories.
hillary? she only came out of her depression to run for senator of NY....and then the presidency for herself. and she used pity and anything else she could to accomplish it all.
That’s because she has more than one child and seems to enjoy being a mom. You don’t think she would love to be the next governor?
good summation. she didn’t lift a finger to save him any humiliation, just let him hoist himself on his own petard. and he is up there, swinging still!
She wasn’t depressed, she was relieved she could ditch him in every way but divorcing him.
i know nothing about any political aspirations of her’s, all i know is she has broken the mold as far as political wives of philandering husbands in her reaction to this affair.
Political periphrasists pursue peripatetic perspicacity. Alliteration abounds. Sotomayor sucks.
Time will tell.
2012, my dyslexia got the better of me.
Unfortunately, she’s not a conservative so they’re hitching their wagon to the wrong star. They’re confusing celebrity with politics again.
Desperation. and i am loathe to say it, but i don’t see sarah palin as a viable candidate for 2012 either. i hope i am wrong, but i see her as damaged goods. saying that kind of thing can get you assassinated on FR, though.
No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the FReeper crowd.
It’s absolutely true. Unfair? Sure. So was the assassination of Newt Gingrich.
No one said life was fair, especially with the state-run media.
Es verdad!!
no, i don’t see the equivalency between the demise of newt and sarah’s destruction. newt brought it all on himself with his unsavory personal conduct. sarah was destroyed by the media. neither will be able to overcome it, though, IMO.
Newt was treated as “the grinch” upon his rise to power in 1994. The media tore him apart.
His infidelity came out much later and had little to do with him being damaged goods.
