Word For The Day, Wednesday, July 1, 2009 - periphrasis
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 07/01/2009

Posted on 07/01/2009 5:50:17 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

periphrasis • \puh-RIFF-ruh-sis\ • noun •

1: use of a longer phrasing in place of a possible shorter form of expression
2: an instance of periphrasis *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

The college English teacher warned her students against padding their essays with periphrases solely to reach the required length.

Did you know?
It's easy enough to point out the origins of "periphrasis": the word was borrowed into English in the early 16th century via Latin from Greek "periphrazein," which in turn comes from the prefix "peri-," meaning "all around," and the verb "phrazein," "to point out." Two common descendants of "phrazein" in English are "phrase" and "paraphrase," the latter of which combines "phrazein" with the prefix "para-," meaning "closely resembling." Another "phrazein" descendant is the less familiar word "holophrasis," meaning "the expression of a complex of ideas in a single word or in a fixed phrase." (The prefix "holo-" can mean "completely.")

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Penile centric? Phimosis can also refer to the clitoris or vagina.

2. a similar condition involving the clitoris.
3. narrowness of the vagina.

so, based on your original post, the charge of being penile-centric was right on target!

Mark Sanford, please SPARE US the protracted periphrasis. two words: "I RESIGN," would suffice.

It's cute when you try to do man things.

I freaked out our Corporate Counsel yesterday. I used the term per stirpes in a sentence. I have previously embarrassed him by knowing force majeure too.

yeah i wonder how he defines crossing the line? That wife cannot want any parts of him at this point, no matter that he has 4 sons with her.

Isn't that the position used at the gyno?

I was searching for the comcast office which was not where the address showed it to be... listening to Fox News... Heard them make a crack about how he said that even though he “crossed the line” with many/several/? women, the chick in SA was his soul mate BUT HE’D TRY TO FALL BACK IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE! lol....it’s too idiotic not to laugh

I have previously embarrassed him by knowing force majeure too.

You've been watching Airheads again...

Milo-Section G, the force majeure, where it says "riots, disturbance, war, acts of God", etc.
Jimmy Wing - What about it?
Milo- Amend that to exclude this hostage crisis. That can be construed as an act of public enemy.
Jimmy- Done.

Could be. Technically the position is called the dorsal lithotomy position, however I doubt anyone has used it to cut for stones in the last 50 years.
