So I said to him, "Barack, I know Abe Lincoln, and you ain't Abe Lincoln."
"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

Each of these men during the worst times of their offices seem to have left America in a better stead than Obamas 100 days in office. That very thought stood foremost in my mind, when I first saw this painting tonight.
And, the fact that the artist chose to portray them all sharing a laugh over a game of poker makes the very concept of their collective greatness even more personal to me.

Thanks for the lecture on Republicans, but since Ronald the Pure raised our taxes and enacted the first amnesty, I guess no one has represented "the GOP well".
Whatever will you bravehearted purists do?

You think that painting is meant to define what Heaven is?
(You do understand that the Presidents Bush are still alive, don't you?)
Why can't it be a gathering of museum paintings at the Smithsonian after hours?
Seriously, get a little perspective.

I meant that Republican does not necessarily equal good and that except for Reagan these men do not represent the GOP well. Well, thanks for clearing that up. Your earlier comment was a bit cryptic to me.
As to your viewpoint on these men's Republican bona fides, well, that's just it - a viewpoint. I'm not up to arguing it tonight.
No matter how any of them scored as Republicans (or conservatives), there's no doubt that all of them were made of much better timber than the pathetic twig that currently resides in our White House.

Amen to that. For my part, I think that Sarah would feel right at home in that crowd. I think so too.

"I don't mind losing the General so much, I can make another in 5 minutes.... but I do regret the loss of the horses" Old Abe had a sense of humor, and was funny, I don't care who you are...
I gotta agree with you there. Abe Lincoln definitely had a way with words. I'll have to pick up a book or two on him sometime, and get to know him better. Unfortunately, I don't have much more than average knowledge about the man.

I think Ford is the most underated man in that picture. Despite his drawbacks he held the county together in almost impossible circumstances. Nixon not only saddled him with Watergate, but also some of the worst economic mismanagment in history and the end of a horribly fought war. Ford once said that being President completely changed his perspective from being a Senator. If I remember correctly he vetoed 56 bills in his two and a half years - a trait we all wish GWB would have picked up.

That’s an interesting take on Gerald Ford. I’ve never looked at him through the lens of the terrible conditions he inherited from Nixon.
Looking at him that way gives me a much better appreciation for his presidency.

I think it’s a charming image.
You’ll notice that Dick “That Whole Bay of Pigs Thing” Nixon and Gerald “Warren Commission” Ford are keeping their cards close to their chests...

I didn’t say the picture was “evil” or “demonic.” I said it was “creepy.”
