The word is out that the Obamas will be spending part of their summer vacation in Martha's Vineyard. "Many blacks from Oak Bluffs are elated that the Only One-in-Chief may be joining them. "People are going to lose their minds!" Tonya Lewis Lee says.
At the same time, there's also a bit of wariness among the wealthiest ones, an uncertainty whether Obama will affirm them. "Obama is more a man of the people," says a Vineyarder who's part of black high society. "He doesn't seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesn't; she is basically a ghetto girl."
"That's what she says--I'm just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did. She hasn't reached out to the social community of Washington, and people are waiting to see what they'll do about that." (New Yorker Magazine)
To call a Harvard lawyer a "ghetto girl" is absolutely ludicrous.
The dynamics of black society is very difficult to understand. We are probably the only race that has prejudices against other members of our own race. This anonymous member of the black elite simply said was what is said among her group.
If Mrs. Obama were light-skinned with hazel eyes maybe she might be a little more tolerable, even though she was raised on the wrong side of the track.

At least they didn't call her a “house negro” like Imawhackjob called The Chosen One.
just goes to show you can’t buy or get class going to Harvard gee, sure does take a loooooooong time to pay off those student loans especially when you have a 6figure salary from Univ Chicago Hosps ................
What an insult to “ghetto” girls!
Good points to consider; thanks for the input.

Baloney. It has nothing to do with color or side of the3 tracks. It is what makes a person ugly. A ghetto girl is angry, racist and hates whites. THAT is what she is talking about. Michelle fits the bill perfectly.
An African and a black American are as different from one another as a Polish farmer is from a white Georgia farmer. It is one thing that bothers me about THE ONE. he doesn’t seem very American.
crybaby, get over. This PC crap is over. The gloves are off and they started it.
I didn’t understand the “brown paper bag rule” thing. It looks like this sort of sorting behavior is just universal.
People on the East Coast were very snotty about Laura Bush. Laura is a barefoot and jeans kind of gal.
In other words, you can take the girl out of the ghetto, but...
NOT a pretty woman. It has more to do with the “set” of her jaw than the shape of her face.
They no doubt are noticing the clothes that the ‘Fashion Queen’ wears & would rather be caught dead - rather than look like her.
Still can’t believe these 2 are in charge...the night of that picture they probably smoked a bowl and talked shop and what local parade they were going to attend.
That happened in Miam also, when the Cubans started flocking in and buying houses. They did not want any part of black neighbors around them - even though a lot of them are mixed race!
Darker than a “brown paper bag” is “too dark.” Not allowed in black high society (among women).
Several years ago Don Imus had an author on (many times) who wrote a book about black “high society” in this country. Wealth created in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s that endures today.
yes she is but she’s also a former teacher & librarian(? i stand corrected on her bio)she’s no dummy, let’s say that
The Kennedys were considered “shanty Irish”. Old Joe Kennedy wanted to live in the town I live in on the South Shore of MA.(Cohasset) He was rebuffed and they moved to the neighboring town of Hull and then to Hyannis.
Oak Bluffs has always been the summer destination of affluent blacks from NY and the surrounding area. I went on a house tour, in Oak Bluffs, visiting the homes of some of these very wealthy blacks. The homes were magnificent.
Can’t wait for jessie jackas* and al to show up with their rent a mob people to protest to be followed by months of hearings by our elected thieves to denounce this entire injustice.
Oh wait, never mind the people who are involved are also black.
