The word is out that the Obamas will be spending part of their summer vacation in Martha's Vineyard. "Many blacks from Oak Bluffs are elated that the Only One-in-Chief may be joining them. "People are going to lose their minds!" Tonya Lewis Lee says.
At the same time, there's also a bit of wariness among the wealthiest ones, an uncertainty whether Obama will affirm them. "Obama is more a man of the people," says a Vineyarder who's part of black high society. "He doesn't seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesn't; she is basically a ghetto girl."
"That's what she says--I'm just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did. She hasn't reached out to the social community of Washington, and people are waiting to see what they'll do about that." (New Yorker Magazine)
To call a Harvard lawyer a "ghetto girl" is absolutely ludicrous.
The dynamics of black society is very difficult to understand. We are probably the only race that has prejudices against other members of our own race. This anonymous member of the black elite simply said was what is said among her group.
If Mrs. Obama were light-skinned with hazel eyes maybe she might be a little more tolerable, even though she was raised on the wrong side of the track.

Those whove earned their wealthprobably most of themhave reason to give him a thumbs down.
Yep, you can't make this stuff up.
The Zeros are just like the Arkansas Grifters, they will never understand that money and power do not equal class.
What’s interesing is that quite a few Dominicans (9 out of 12) I have met through my friend are married to Puerto Ricans! LOL!
LOL
Love hate relationship!
I wonder if Paul Shanklin can work some Magic with this.
You really don’t understand. “High Yellow” and “Jesse Jackson” are two decidedly different concepts.
After you’ve lived in a place like DC for a while and see enough different parts of the black community, this article makes total sense. Not saying it’s right or good, but there are “standards”.
ouch
The author is totally clueless. My mother has told me about being looked down on and called an "Okie".
Those whove earned their wealthprobably most of themhave reason to give him a thumbs down.
They do, and they should. Much better to have done it last November instead of waiting 'til July, however.
I also know that my Dominican friend is VERY popular amongst the Mexican ladies...hahaha...but they have a hard time understanding his Spanish....
Indeed. The hoity-toity of the East Coast sure looks down on Sara Palin.
if you are a REAL African, well.....let’s just say the American blacks hold you in a ton of contempt.
The feeling is mutual form the experience I have had with Kenyan and Nigerian members of our church. They do not understand American blacks.
Blacks have an “elite?”
Not long ago I was at a dinner with a group that included a Latina. When the subject of Obama's Supreme Court nominee came up, the first words out of her mouth, with a look of disdain, were, "She's a Puerto Rican!".
It isn’t where she was raised that got her that label, its the attitude of entitlement she carries with her that got her that label.
Guess they’ve never heard of white folks being snubbed by their “own”. Hahahaha author is ignorant...
LOL and she dyes her hair “blond”. silly woman.
Even an Anglo can tell the differences between a Mexican and a Cuban and a Puerto Rican.
Uh-huh, that’s the way I see it.
I don’t think being FLOTUS automatically garantees(sp?) admission or acceptance into black elite society, much less the millions of blacks who are not elite and didnt vote Obama and are horrified that he is POTUS.
imho the black elite out in Oak Harbor look down their collective noses at FLOTUS because of her parents and their background neither of them having college degrees and not aspiring to something more. Machete Michelle hasn’t reached out to this group either because she lacks the social skills and her brash ways, her arrogance and vileness are everything the insular black elite abhor.
Not with the misuse of subject/verb agreement.
