Have you ever seen the movie, "Joe Somebody?"
Posted on 06/26/2009 7:24:20 PM PDT by LouAvul
Remember the scene where he declines to fight the bully? His daughter is on the hilltop, giving him a mischievous smile, sitting on her bicycle, and the bicycle seat has flashing lights.
I took a contemporary theology class in college and we discussed cinematic symbolism. The texts we were using affirmed that in movies, nothing is accidental. Everything has a purpose.
So in "Joe Somebody," what's with the flashing bicycle seat?

Sometimes a cigar is just a a cigar. In this case, the flashing bicycle seat is a cigar.

Back up, or retreat. It’s a liberal thing.

One of my favorite Tim Allen movies. I guess the flashing light is a warning to car drivers that there is a bike ahead.

That movie was as gay as it gets. All that preparation, just for him to puss out at the end, as if that was the moral high ground. Libthink.

The texts we were using affirmed that in movies, nothing is accidental. Everything has a purpose. So what did your "contemporary theology" course have to say about the meaning of "Ishtar", "Howard the Duck", and "Plan 9 From Outer Space"?

The flashing bicycle seat is a nihilistic commentary on man's abandonment in an indifferent universe. It is, ultimately, a searing indictment of the arrogance of men who assume there is meaning where there is none.
Or, it's a frickin' flashing bicycle seat.

"Howard the Duck",
Howard T. Duck: What is the name of this place?
Beverly: Oh, Cleveland.
Howard T. Duck: Cleve-Land. Perfectly weird name for this planet.

Even with the crazy 80’s hair, Leah Thompson was one fine looking lady in Howard the Duck.

Yes, no scene is without purpose to advance the story. No, I haven’t seen the movie. A flashing bicycle seat? Probably not a safety device for night riding. Maybe a beacon in the night like a lighthouse warning of danger yet a source of attraction for some.

T.S. Eliot owned such a bicycle seat.
