Cheerleading safety efforts have led to modest reductions in the number of serious injuries in recent years, according to a new report about college and high school sports and cheerleading mishaps. But cheerleading continues to cause more serious and deadly injuries by far than other sports. Researchers have long known how dangerous cheerleading is, but records were poorly kept until recently.
An update to the record-keeping system last year found that between 1982 and 2007, there were 103 fatal, disabling or serious injuries recorded among female high school athletes, with the vast majority (67) occurring in cheerleading.
The next most dangerous sports: gymnastics (nine such injuries) and track (seven). Today, the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill released its 26th annual report on the topic. The latest figures are from the 2007-2008 academic year for college and high school sports, male and female. The report defines catastrophic injuries as any severe or fatal injury incurred during participation in the sport.

Cheerleading is a sport?
Cheerleading Must Be Banned! Especially If You’re Carrying a Pocketknife!
If your on the sideline, bouncing around and not paying attention to the game, and the play is called to that side, I can see where it might well be a tad bit dangerous.
That happened to a gal in my high school. EVERYONE thought she flashed them as she twirled and her skirt rose.
She was crying and saying “the underwear is sewn into the outfit, it RODE UP!!!”
The prevalence of head injuries would explain the academic performance of most cheerleaders.
I have to agree. I have bumped my head many a time on the underside of the seats in the stands, and God did not design our necks to turn at a rate of speed any faster than it it takes to watch a tennis match.
Yeah, happened in my high school. Shelley was at the top and she ended up falling or getting dropped and she fell hard. She totally blew out her knee, had to have surgery. It was bad
In Wisconsin, the state supreme court ruled that cheerleading was a sport. As such, schools were not held liable for injuries.
I’ve seen near-accidents while watching high school sports... but you know what? It is just life... accidents do happen... we can’t let fear control us... otherwise our ancestors would never have left the caves.
I see she’s wearing her ‘love me for my mind’ outfit.
Ew. I remember seeing an episode on Dr. Phil where this girl was suing the school district because she didn’t get on the squad while a girl got in despite having an injury.
Interestingly, they give points for spirit and the injured girl showed more than the one who was able to do all the dance steps. I still can’t believe that someone would sue over not being allowed on a cheerleading squad.
