he did not believe the crime was serious enough and throwing Abbate behind bars would not be a deterrent to others.

It would deter him from beating up women, at least while he was in jail. It probably wouldn't deter drunken Chicago cops from beating people in bars and getting away with it.

He noted that Abbate had no prior criminal history

If you don't count the guy he beat earlier......and the other incidents that probably got covered up because there was no video.

Abbate had faced several charges, including intimidation, conspiracy and communicating with a witness and official misconduct.

A fine upstanding young man.

The police department is seeking to have Abbate fired,

Gotta love unions.

I’m fairly agnostic about barfights, having observed that both parties (usually) share the blame. I object, however, to the notion that after a fight with an off-duty cop one party gets arrested and the other gets offered a ride home.
