CTIRUS [sic] HEIGHTS (CBS13)
Three Citrus Heights families are without a home after an explosion rocked their apartment complex apparently because one of the tenants was tired of cockroaches.
The Sacramento Metro Fire Department says nearly a million dollars in damage was caused when Tone Pene set off a number of bug bombs in his apartment. Pene says he used 8 to 10 foggers, but Sacramento Metro Fire says they found evidence of up to 18 bug bombs.
The foggers somehow found an ignition source, possibly the refrigerator, causing an explosion that left the building with serious structural damage. Sac Metro Fire says the force of the blast caused the wall to become disconnected from the roof and blew out the windows sending glass flying.
Fortunately, no one was hurt. Pene says he was surprised by the blast because he has used the bug bombs before.
"I don't know what happened. I do this every month and I don't know what happened today," Pene told CBS13.
Tony's family along with two others are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Sacramento Metro Fire is reminding people to read the instructions when working with flammable products.
Despite, the explosion and bug bombs, live cockroaches can still be seen in the apartment.
A puppy stands on the porch of a home just destroyed by fire. According to the State Fire Marshal Report, the cause of the fire was linked to the use of "bug bombs" or Total Release Insect Foggers (TRIFs). Ever since the replacement of non-flammable CFC aerosol propellants with flammable propellants such as propane and butane, aerosols and bug bombs have presented increased fire risk.
If he does it every month, that might explain why they found 18 cans in his house.
Unfortunately, bombing your own place in a connected dwelling isn’t all that useful. Of course, blowing the place up will probably solve the roach problem.
The AI in Combat is very effective with “social insects” — ie, roaches, ants, etc. It works really well where even a couple of the insects get into the poison and carry it back to the larger group.
Another product I’ve used as a barrier/contact insecticide that I really like, and is labeled for use even in the kitchen, is Tempo Ultra SC. No license required, a little spendy, but very safe around children and animals. It is a synthetic pyrethroid.
.
Ignorant do-gooders strike again;think of the millions who have suffered from insect-borne diseases following the DDT ban.
Thank you for the tip.
I am book marking this although I dont think I will have a problem again. But just in case one never knows.
I dont know if the other products you mentioned are sold here in Panama, but what you wrote is a keeper if I need the information in the future.
Just out of curiosity, does one need a license in the States to buy Combat?
I ask because our laws are not so stringent here.
Insect growth regulators work great. They don't smell, they don't leave stains, they work for a very long time, and they don't blow up your house.
Well, the EPA guy at the end of the segment on Mythbusters said that it happens once or twice a year in California. So he was right!
HAHAHA!
Yep. The image in #21 says it all.
When you live near filthy neighbors even in detached units, vermin control is a full time job.
Roaches 1 hum-ans 0
Yes. When I lived in an apartment in the M.E., boy did I find out the hard way! Hadn’t been there 24 hours, when, putting my slipper on in the morning, felt something wiggly ....it was a roach the size of your thumb!
Even the best measures can’t be overcome easily when the roaches have taken hold.
Way to solve that whole Global Warming problem Al.
Combat is sold over the counter here in the US. Consumer-grade product in gel form.
Tempo isn’t as commonly found in consumer outlets - a better place to look here in the US is in retail outlets that cater to semi-rural residents, like Tractor Supply, or R Supply. You’ll need a sprayer or spray bottle and need to dilute the Tempo according to the product instructions.
I really like Tempo — good kill without the side effects of OP’s or Carbamates.
Thank you for your reply.
He gasses his apartment with 18 bug bombs every month?
