Laugh at the mail carrier if you wish, but I spent weeks in the hospital with Cat Scratch Fever. The Bartonella henselae bacteria is one nasty bug. My fever stayed so high I suffered from hallucinations and doctors had to surgically remove tumors that began springing up in my lymph nodes.

About 40 percent of all cats carry the Bartonella henselae bug at some point in their lives, but it’s even more prevalent among kittens.

Okay. I call BS. I can’t even imagine not being able to get mail into that slot without putting one’s whole hand that far into it that the kitten would be able to slash it. I bet the twit was playing with the kitten through the slot and got played with herself. “Hi cute kitty! [wiggles fingers] Aaaaarrrhg! Beast!”

This might not work in jolly old England, but I’d fire back and accuse the letter carrier of trespass if her hand was that far into my house. Surely the postal employees have a duty to keep themselves out of harm’s way if they possibly can, and in this case, that would involve not sticking her hand that far into the letter slot.

Oh, the stories I could tell of the things that I’ve discovered in mailboxes. The one that probably caused me the most distress was opening a large mailbox only to find someone had strategically placed a dead raccoon so that when I lowered the lid, we were eyeball to eyeball. Not for long though. I shut that lid in world record time. No mail for that patron that day. Took me quite a while to get over it. People who carry grudges fill mailboxes with cow manure, little kids like to leave frogs, flowers and sometimes little kittens for me. Birds take up residence, ants, spiders and wasps use them for breeding boxes.
