"Freedom of Speech" means you won't be arrested, imprisoned or otherwise suffer official sanction for what you say.

"Freedom of Speech" does not mean that you can say what you please without consequence.

If it did, then

"No, Mommy, I didn't eat the cookies [and I don't know how I got crumbs on my face]"

and

"Why, yes dear, those pants do make you look fat [or maybe you really are puttin' on the pounds]"

would be perfectly OK with the hearers thereof.

I'm sorry to understand that this has to be explained.

I'm GLAD that Sarah responded as quickly as she did. She's also been clear that David Letterman need not apologize to HER, but to flight attendants, and young women all over this country.

So she's not acting offended for herself, but about the seeming acceptance of degrading comments about women being allowed to happen in the name of 'entertainment'. This is the wise thing to do, and though those same 'entertainment' folks will try to spin it against Sarah, I think most folks will understand her position on the subject completely.
