LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
Authorities are getting prepared for the possible riotous celebration that may accompany a Los Angeles Lakers NBA championship win on Sunday night.
"We have the ability to put together resources very quickly if we go to (tactical) alert -- to pull resources in from around the city," Los Angeles police Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell said.
McDonnell says the LAPD plans to deploy heavier than usual that night so the department will have the sufficient resources to deal with whatever happens.
Staples Center usually shows away games on its outdoor big-screen televisions, but will not on Sunday night. However, several large sports bars and restaurants in the adjacent L.A. Live entertainment complex will be open for business.
Staples spokesman Michael Roth urged fans to stay at home and watch the game and said no public viewing facilities would be available at Staples or L.A. Live.
Disturbances have followed Lakers championship victories in 200, 2001 and 2002. One year, fans watching the game on outdoor giant screens at Staples rampaged down Figueroa Boulevard, smashing dozens of car windows at nearby auto dealers.
On Thursday, overenthusiastic fans in East Los Angeles stormed an intersection and vandalized cars following the Lakers' overtime victory over the Orlando Magic, which gave the team a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Game 5 will be played Sunday in Orlando, with a Lakers victory there giving the team its 15th NBA championship.
"Fans -- having a good time doesn't mean hurting people," Sheriff Lee Baca said. "The Lakers are a sports team, not some kind of a destructive force, and therefore celebrate and enjoy, but don't commit any violence."
I wonder Ronnie King will be present for the celebration?
This would be nothing compared to if welfare checks don’t go out next month
QUAGMIRE!!!
I live in Orlando. Win or lose, there won’t be any riots here.
They're not really grownups. They're GINOs.
Yes. Two ways out of that predicament. One is to appeal to past experience. Riots have occured at Staples Center. Two is to point out that the mayor is in charge of the police and the mayor is Hispanic. He can't be racist because as a Hispanic he has no power. And the police are merely acting on his orders so they can't be acting in a racist fashion either.
Use the left's methods of reasoning against them.
I hate to say this
Everytime in LA when sport team wins everybody riots
They'll still riot.
You know it!
Who's worse: Yankee fans or all of L.A. sports' fans.
It's a draw. ...both are equally obnoxious.
I live in the Hollywood section and most of my neighbors already have their LAKER car flags on LOL. There wont be a riot but every car should be at Staples Center because LA is not known as a riot city in sports..it’s a laid back city.
LA will only riot if the mexicans or blacks are pissed..
Why is this nonsense going on in this country?
Hey man,Orlando is my hometown.I went to Boone High School.Go Magic!!Like Coach V once wrote “Never Give UP” either way no fire’s are burning in O-Ville.Take care
A tank unit might be helpful. The “event” will be ugly regardless of the score.
Can’t say this, gut never saw any preparation for this for the World Series or the Stanley Cup. It would be non-divesatitical to say that.
Other than that I'd rather watch paint dry.
That said, I do love college hoops.
NFL...I can watch it all day on any given Sunday. That's just how I roll :)
I don’t care all that much for college sports...it wouldn’t bother me if they got rid of college sports altogether & focused on EDUCATION instead (whhoda thunk it?).
Quit giving majors in basket weaving so they kids can join the professional ranks in only 1 year. Or better yet, require that everyone who is eligible to enter the pro ranks have a 4-year college diploma (& yes, even if it is due to having a basket-weaving major)!

>>The 1994 Stanley Cup Riot occurred in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the evening of June 14, 1994 and continued into the following morning. The riot arose after Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals in which the Vancouver Canucks lost to the New York Rangers. The suspected cause was due to biased refereeing during the New York home game.
I remember there were riots in Oak when Raiders lost.
One person was killed in Boston after Red Sox victory riot.
One person was also killed in Boston after Patriots won
Super Bowl.

New England Patriots fans turned rowdy after their team’s 32-29 Super Bowl win over the Carolina Panthers, flipping cars and lighting small fires as thousands swarmed the streets. One person was killed when a driver backed his sport utility vehicle into a group of revelers.
Don’t forget Detroit...they’re good for a few riots...I am surprised they didn’t have one after losing the Stanley Cup Finals in Game 7 AT HOME.
Or maybe they did riot, and the news didn’t cover it.
Here we go...24 game minutes left.
