The really decisive hole was the dog-leg fourth, where Nelson fired a No. 1 iron from 210 yards against the flag for a deuce, an eagle, which put the championship beyond recall, so far as Wood was concerned.

I wonder if anyone in the gallery screamed, "IN THE HOLE!"

For any younger golf fans who might wonder how that course could be stretched out beyond 6,700 yards (today's are only 7,300 or so) with the primitive equipment of 1939, yet play only to par 69, the answer is simple: the fairways probably were unsprinklered, resulting in substantial summer fairway roll. I remember when an older municipal Long Beach course first got fairway sprinklers c. 1970. Prior to that, what watering was done was with hose-mounted sprinklers, which could not possibly apply nearly as much water.

Thanks for posting this. I especially enjoyed the writing, including the author's comment that the Depression "forced" Lord Byron to take up golf as his vocation!
