It is not possible for authorities to trace the rifle used in this week's shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum to the original purchaser, a law enforcement source said Friday. Shooting suspect James von Brunn is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by security officers. The source, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation, said the weapon is a Winchester Model 6, .22 caliber rifle -- a type of gun manufactured between 1908 and 1928 -- long before records were kept on gun purchases. Authorities also were checking to see if the weapon had been used in any other crime, the source said.

The law also required that all newly-manufactured firearms produced by licensed manufacturers in the United States and imported into the United States bear a serial number. Firearms manufactured prior to the Gun Control Act remain exempt from the serial number requirement. Defacement or removal of the serial number (if present) is a felony offense.

I tried the magnet (sticks good) and a strong mag. glass
and it all looks “factory” to me,,,bore/etc. perfect,,,
Looks new,,,been in my Mom's cedar chest for 60 + years,,,
I've got an old American Rifleman (somewhere)that shows
all three grades,2 blue(black grips),1 nickeled(horn?grips).
Along with tieing it to other crimes, he was a felon. If the purchase was illegal they'd go after the seller.
