Rifle used in museum shooting too old to trace, official says

It is not possible for authorities to trace the rifle used in this week's shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum to the original purchaser, a law enforcement source said Friday. Shooting suspect James von Brunn is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by security officers. The source, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation, said the weapon is a Winchester Model 6, .22 caliber rifle -- a type of gun manufactured between 1908 and 1928 -- long before records were kept on gun purchases. Authorities also were checking to see if the weapon had been used in any other crime, the source said.

I used to tell people that I thought my old glenfield model 60 was ideal for self defense. They always thought I was a loon. Now I feel vindicated.

.

Antique Remingtons are not serial stamped in a system like Colts and Smith & Wessons

A low SN on a Colt often means gold

A low stamped number on a 19th century Remington derringer or revolver or rifle has now relationship to the value of the firearm

That's a model 7 in .351 cal you posted there. Here's the 6...

It might have been the gun the crazy goof had when he was a kid.

It was probably a Winchester Model 1906, an old pump action.

Although they are well dressed - I see only a two-story frame house on a farm.

~~~
Hey,there,,,Your post caught my eye,,,
I have a .41 Rem. rimfire derringer,,,Top Grade of 3,,,
Nickled with polished bone/horn/? grips,,,
The only numbers I can find is “26” stamped under the barrel
and “Remington Arms Co. Ilion,NY” on top,,,
I can’t find any other marks on it,,,
Is “26” the SN...?
From the NFA 0f 34.
§ 5842. Identification of firearms
(a) Identification of firearms other than destructive devices. -- Each manufacturer and importer and anyone making a firearm shall identify each firearm, other than a destructive device, manufactured, imported, or made by a serial number which may not be readily removed, obliterated, or altered, the name of the manufacturer, importer, or maker, and such other identification as the Secretary may by regulations prescribe.
Actually the NFA of '34 only applies to NFA firearms, i.e. fully automatic, short barreled shotguns etc.
Not till GCA '68 did serial numbers become mandatory for the rest. I have a couple of firearms purchased new from the dealer in '65 & '66 with no numbers. I actually ordered one through the mail and had it delivered via Railway Express to my door step.
Funny, I see nothing to dislike or revile in “palatial manor” and “cocktails in the Library”.
I suppose you didn’t notice the rolling hills, their property? Wealth is nothing to distain. This is classic “Nick and Nora” Charles fare.
.
Remington made firearms in several locations and name stampings vary also
That number you mentioned is not the SN
Look under the removable grips on the left side
There is often a stamped number there - it is not a SN either
My .32rf Remington New Line revolver is stamped like that
Check some of the antique handguns books - They will explain it
Also call Dixie Gun Works in TN
They have a large informative parts catolog and also published a small catalog of Antique DGW Firearms for sale
Jim Supica (a recovering attorney) is an excellent antique firearms dealer and author - he specializes in S&W - but is up on about anything
TANKS a bunch for your help and info,,,
I pulled the grips and found another “26” on the left side.
This gun was Gran’Pappy’s “hide-out” back in the days when
they were runnin’ the Tombstone/Bisby area...
