It wasn’t going 30,000mph when it hit him. His hand would have exploded if it had.
I dunno how they arrived at 30,000 mph, but it’s quite credible. A object falling from the Ort cloud to the surface of earth will be traveling about 44 km/sec (100,000 mph), most of the acceleration being provided by the sun’s gravity. The atmosphere will slow it down some...
I thought that, too, but if it just grazed his hand and hit nearly parallel to the skin’s surface (like 0.00001 degress), MAYBE.
Precisely what I was thinking.....but I clicked on the story anyway!
Probably, it grazed him, and did not “bounce off” him, and then create a divot of the stated size.
Unless the kid is super-human or....not really HUMAN AT ALL!!
This is HUGH and SERIES!!!
We’ve got an inter-galatic war going on here on earth!! No wonder Obama is spending the way he is.
No wonder....

You misread, actually the boy was going 30,000 mph.
Not true. At that velocity, very little of its energy would be transferred to his hand. It might punch a neat round hole through... or (as in this case) where it hits obliquely, a longitudinal gouge. I doubt the meteorite "bounced" off his hand... at that velocity I doubt his hand had much effect on the meteor. If they had said his hand bounced off the meteor, I think that would be more correct.
