STANLEY CUP FINALS! - GAME 7 !!!
NHL.COM ^ | June 10, 2009 | vanity

Game 7 of the Final is hockey's ultimate contest

For a hockey fan, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final is like waiting for Christmas: It seems like the big day takes forever to get there, but when it does, it's well worth the wait.

Of course, Christmas comes just once a year. A Final series that goes the maximum seven games comes along infrequently. Since the NHL expanded from the Original Six teams in 1967, the championship round has gone the distance just eight times, including this year's Final between Detroit and Pittsburgh. If the Stanley Cup Final is really the NHL's two best teams facing off for the championship, it seems logical that there would be more than eight seven-gamers in a span of 42 years — after all, baseball's World Series has gone the distance 14 times in the same span (though not since 2002).

But baseball has just eight teams in the postseason and only two rounds of playoffs before the World Series, so there's a much smaller likelihood of upsets in the early going. In contrast, with three rounds and potentially 21 games to play just to get to the Final, at least one of the teams is often worn out from the journey.

as opposed to Maxime Talbot and his two goals?

He really picked it up after Sid left the game.

Congratulations Pittsburgh Penguins
You Earned It!

"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a trimphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.” - General George S. Patton Jr.

Great job!

BTW, I think it would have been fitting if Malkin and Fleury shared the Conn Smythe trophy.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on a fine comeback and a great season.

For all you Wings fans out there, please don’t use the 4 and 12 excuse. YOur team had a great season and just lost to a better team.

On any given night.....

According to this story, the cup is now always accompanied by an official from the NHL,

That is THE CUP.......Its always handled by the"handlers" with white gloves so as not to wear out the truly expensive silver engravings.

there is another "travel cup" that the players all get to share.

Here's a little story about my nephew. He was training in thorasic surgery with the University of Pittsburgh hospital. One day while working in the emergency room, he happened to treat a man for burns. The conversation turned to hockey (my nephew was an all state defenseman in his high school senior year, played hockey for Williams College in Mass., graduated took a year off from school to play semi-pro hockey in Europe, came home and went to med school at U of M)

The guy he was talking to happend to be a son or something of a person who one of the hockey divisions was named after.(I never got the name). They guy invited my nephew to his house the following weekend for party he was giving. It was a huge house and a lot of the guests turned out to be ex-NHL players. Thats when my nephew realized who the guy was.

Anyway, these ex-NHL stars played hockey on a regular basis at the Penguin arena and they invited my nephew to come out and play with them, which he did. Then they invited him to play with them whenever they participated in charity fund raiser.........So he continued to skate and play with those guys while he was in Pittsburgh until he moved on to Harvard a few years ago.

Anyway, two Red Wing Stanleys ago, my nephew and my other nephew were at the final game together when the Wings won it. My nephew then got a call from one of the guys on that charity team inviting he and my other nephew to the private party the wings were having that night following the game. (It turns out my nephew's friend was a financial planner for several of the red wing players)........Anyway, my nephews both got to party with the wings and have their pictures taken with Yzerman, Scottie Bowman and several other players........that was cool.

Wow, thanks for posting that picture. I never realized how big his hands are. Not many wanted to get hit with one of those haymakers.

Same here - the pressure by the Wings was intense. Props to Flower for playing another great game.

Cool story.

Looks like I won't be drinking out of the Cup again this year since Detroit lost, but maybe next year!

Congratulations on that BIG WIN by the Hershey Bears!

And of course, congrats to the Cup win by the Pens. That was the LONGEST 3rd period of any game I can remember (and I've been through a lot of LONG ones with the Pens.)

Just got back from a teleconference at the Lebanon VA. Even though I had to drag my hung over butt out of bed this morning, I'm going to watch the Penguins game now. Assuming I don't fall asleep on the couch.

It was a great day for hockey! Stanley Cup champions and Calder Cup champions all in one night!!

I still have to order a ton of “Penguins Stanley Cup Champions” merchandise!!

When I drank from it, it was actually slated to be at a charity fund raiser the next day, but Brian took it out the night before to some of his favorite local places.

Brian Leetch? What's the rest of the story??? Tell, please!

Would love to be there.

It was Brian Rafalski, not Brian Leetch.

Not much of a wild story, but cool to me. My family and I were at a local pizza restaurant, about one mile from where I live, and Brian comes in with the Stanley Cup. He let the owners fill it with beer, and the locals lined up and got to drink from it.

Pretty mundane, but one of the highlights of my life. As I said, Brian lives only a few miles from me, so I have met him a few times, and he is truly a great guy.
