Game 7 of the Final is hockey's ultimate contest
For a hockey fan, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final is like waiting for Christmas: It seems like the big day takes forever to get there, but when it does, it's well worth the wait.
Of course, Christmas comes just once a year. A Final series that goes the maximum seven games comes along infrequently. Since the NHL expanded from the Original Six teams in 1967, the championship round has gone the distance just eight times, including this year's Final between Detroit and Pittsburgh. If the Stanley Cup Final is really the NHL's two best teams facing off for the championship, it seems logical that there would be more than eight seven-gamers in a span of 42 years after all, baseball's World Series has gone the distance 14 times in the same span (though not since 2002).
But baseball has just eight teams in the postseason and only two rounds of playoffs before the World Series, so there's a much smaller likelihood of upsets in the early going. In contrast, with three rounds and potentially 21 games to play just to get to the Final, at least one of the teams is often worn out from the journey.

The Cup isn’t under constant security?
There is probably some "security", but it is obviously pretty loose. I don't remember any, but it could have been there.
There was an article a couple of years ago about all the places the Cup has been, and what gross things were done in it. It was very humorous, and I will try and find it on line again.
According to this story, the cup is now always accompanied by an official from the NHL, so somebody must have been there. They must just stand in the background, and let fans have fun with it (as it should be).

Stanley Cup Champions! Pittsburgh Penguins.
Penguins win Stanley Cup
Bears win Calder Cup
Congrats!!
I'm a nervous wreck after the third period,, thought the Red Wings might win.
Thanks for the Pings. Just ordered our jerseys.
Red Wings really fought for the win, and the Penguins were running around way too much in their own end. I thought they were cooked in the 3rd.
They were booing Bettman, everybody booes Bettman, the most hated commish in sports history. I thought it was really cool they stayed through so much of the celebration. You expect cities that never see the Cup to stick around but Wings fans have seen the Cup a lot lately.
They’re there, but unless it’s actually going to damage the Cup they let the players do what want. Vast quantities of many types of alcohol have been drunk from the Cup. The trick is to not use a polish that leaches off in the booze and makes people sick.
It’s a great day for Penguin’s hockey:-)
I loved watching the players holding up the cup in Detroit.
Hershey Bears are holding a celebration tomorrow night at the arena in Hershey after their win tonight at Manitoba for the Calder Cup. I will be there.
Wonder when the Burgh will have the celebration for the Pens?
How cool is this??? City of Champions again!!!
Geno winning the MVP; Talbot...what heart (and great shots!!! ); Satan blocking that shot...AWESOME!!! Happy for the Lemieuxs...and Sid has a long time to heal!!!
Its a great day for hockey!!!
It’s a great day for hockey!
It’s a great day for Pittsburgh!
I guess Hossa “needs” to find another team for the Cup. ;-)
