VIRGINIA BEACH

A dog attacked a woman in a gas station parking lot this morning, causing serious injuries to her throat, police said.

Just before noon, the woman was walking across the parking lot of the WilcoHess station in the 4400 block of Princess Anne Road, when the dog jumped from a vehicle and attacked her, said Officer Margie Long, a police spokeswoman.

It took two citizens to pull the dog off her, and she suffered serious injuries that required surgery, she said.

Officials took the dog, an Akita, to Animal Control, and charges are pending against the owner, Long said.

The woman was a manager at the gas station, an employee said. No additional information was immediately available.

Yeah, but you can be sure the pit bulls were lurking in the shadows, waiting to attack. The Akita beat them to it, this time.
Right, Chet?

...nothing personal, Chet, I actually love reading your threads on pit bulls.

Same here. And I would've shot the dog on the spot.

The dog was probably driven there by an SUV. SUV and DOG terrorize women
on Princess Anne.

OK, we’ve located the Leader of the Pit Bulls. All the Pit Bulls were busy, so he had to do his own work.

Hey, leadership’s hard sometimes.

About 20 years or so ago, a local talk radio station hired a dj turned talk show host named Perry Stone.

At that time I guess Akitas were the attack dogs from hell.

Perry said that he owned an Akita and that it was the sweetest thing.

You never knew if the guy was telling the truth or pulling your leg.

He had one spot for his show, it had an announcer saying, "You're listening to PS... BS..., the Perry Stone Broadcasting System, in a over the top delivery. Perhaps it was a take off on James Earl Jones' "This is CNN" spot.

He didn't last long, maybe 6 months or so.

Akita. I raised them years ago. Last one I had was 9 yrs ago. My daughter was a baby & she was fine with her however my husband couldn’t go near the baby without the dog going nuts. I co-owned her with another breeder & the dog went back to her & she bought me out. I’ve heard good & bad things about them. My friend’s Akita just attacked her brother for no reason we can think of. Bear could have ripped off his face but he didn’t. Now Bear isn’t allowed out when there is company. Just like any dog there are sweet ones & nasty ones.

No problem. I really think many dog attacks are because people buy dogs on impulse. They don't know if the breed is going to be too big for them etc. My friend has no business owning her Akita, Bear. She can not control the dog. That dog is the alpha male in her house & thankfully she has no children. She refuses to listen to any advice I try to give her so I've stopped. Bear is dangerous & she is going to find that out sadly.

Akitas are on my insurance company’s “bad dog list” along with pit bulls, rotts, dobies and german shepherds.

I used to hear that puppy akitas were ideal to raise with children. They would bond on those kids and protect them with their lives.

The downside is they might rip somebody to shreds just for coming too close to them.

I never trusted them though. Something a little strange about that breed. Not like other dogs.

I love my two cuddly kitty cats, but I’m not sure how trustworthy they’d be if they weighed 40+ pounds!

Same here. When we moved to NC and bought this house they asked if we had a dog and what kind.
We had a cocker spaniel, I asked why they wanted to know and she said because we won’t insure certain breeds which she then listed.

Police had one in my town a few years back. The canine cop raised the dog with his children. One day the dog went after his son & almost ripped the child's face off. My husband hates Akita's after our Akita went nuts each time he picked our then baby up. Funny as long as he wasn't near the baby she liked him well enough.
