. . . not merely a natural and straightforward biography, but a film which indisputably has the right to be called Americana.

Henry Fonda did an inspired job in this movie and made himself a superstar. Captured Lincoln’s Kentucky accent and mannerisms perfectly.

You are welcome. Thanks for your interest and kind words. I have fun with these posts.

I mean to ping the two movie buffs on my list to reviews but I usually forget.

Having to portray a historic figure of American History, and do so convincingly has to be the most challenging thing an actor can do.

Example of times it worked

John Adams HBO series – Paul Giamatti.

Glory – Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Shaw.

Example of times it did not work

The Crossing – Jeff Daniels as George Washington. Great movie, but Daniels just did not come off as a convincing Washington.

Gettysburg – Martin Sheen as Robert E Lee. When General Lee was on camera, I saw only Sheen with a fake beard.

I remember being impressed with the guy who played Col. Chamberlain. But who knows if it was accurate or not.

Biographies are risky all right. How about Gregory Peck as Douglas MacArthur vs. George C. Scott as Gen. Patton? And Tom Selleck did an OK job as Eisenhower as I recall. Oh, and Henry Fonda was Admiral Nimitz in Midway many years after he was POTUS Lincoln.
