High-roller has bad feng shui in US casino: report
AFP ^ | 30 May 2009 | AFP

A Taiwanese man who lost two million US dollars in Las Vegas is threatening to sue the casino for using feng shui to cause his losing streak, a report here said.

The man, surnamed Yuan, alleged that the Venetian dug a one-metre (40-inch) square hole on the wall of the presidential suite he was staying in April last year and covered it with a black cloth, said Apple Daily.

The casino also put two white towels in front of Yuan's suite and turned on two large fans facing his room without notifying him, it said.

Yuan claimed that his luck turned bad after discovering the arrangements and that he went from winning 400,000 dollars to losing two million, the report said.

"We Chinese drape black and white cloths only when there is a death in the family. It is such a taboo for regular people, let alone for the gamblers," he was quoted as saying.

Yuan filed a complaint against the Venetian after returning to Taiwan and demanded the cancellation of a two-million-dollar debt to the casino, half of it on credit, it said.

The casino has promised to refund him 100,000 dollars in cash and the same amount in chips, the paper said, without explaining why it had agreed to this.

Yuan had notified the Venetian through his lawyer of his intention to sue for feng shui sabotage if the casino fails to come up with a "reasonable solution," it said.

Feng shui, or wind and water, is an ancient Chinese belief that seeks to channel good and bad psychic energy through the arrangement of furniture and ornaments.

Years ago I read about a guy who was losing his house because of his gambling debts. The casino went so far as to pay up what he was behind on his bills. I don’t recall the exact process they used but in the end, the casino ended up with a 2 million dollar home for a couple hundred thousand dollars.

My son can count cards in Blackjack. I’ve watched him take five straight, scoop the chips up and walk away at Mystic Lake.

Hmmm. I think I would have stopped after winning the $400,000 and enjoyed the rest of my vacation! I’m not greedy.

"My son can count cards in Blackjack. I’ve watched him take five straight, scoop the chips up and walk away at Mystic Lake."

I've been to Mystic Lake before, though I live in Denver. What most people don't understand about a card counter's advantage (or conversely, about the casino's advantage over everyone else) is that this statistical advantage becomes most pronounced over the long run. In the short run, though, anything can happen.

That is why slot players can sometimes come out thousands ahead in a given day, and why card counters (who should have an advantage) can lose thousands over a short period. Let both of them play for a long enough time, however, and the slot player will end up a loser and the card counter a winner overall.

An intuitive way to envision this is with flipping a coin. Obviously, on any given flip the odds are exactly 50% that heads will be the outcome and 50% that it will be tails. However, if you flip the coin say 20 times it would not be surprising if you ended up with something like 13 heads and 7 tails. The more times you flip it, however, the closer the overall outcome will come to 50/50.

When I visited the Las Vegas casino, I was told to always play the game in town with the best odds for the risktaker. Some find out which game that is by asking dealers from other Casinos, but in my case, I figured I’d just buy stock in the casino. Best odds in town. (now to figure out how to cash out and leave...)

"All the superstition in the world can't repeal the laws of mathematics. "

Unless the supernatural can indeed be influenced by thinking. There have several films about this topic out there in the last decade. There are people out there who can be incredibly lucky, while at other times incredibly unlucky,..as in an accident looking for a place to happen.

Jeremy was a dish washer at ML one summer before heading off to Iowa State for a BS in Computer Science. He said he watched the player to the dealer’s far right seem to have better odds when there were three or more players at the table.

But hold on here people.

I am going to agree with the gambler on this one.

If Feng Shui is crappola as stated here by many, and gambling is just that, gambling, then why would a billion dollar hotel purposely do those things that would give bad karma to their guest?

Theoreticlly, the guest should lose anyway because the odds are with the hotel. No, by creating this environment they acknowledged that they were serious in doing what they could to screw with this guys emotions which would have had an impact on how he played.

And by the quick way they gave him something back, they acknowledged that that was in fact what their intention was.

I can just see the casino management now.

When it comes to whales, they maintain a running account on how to keep them at there casino, so the odds pay off over time.

If this whale is worth several million and now files a court case, it is cheaper to 1) make a token payment, 2) dedicate a budget to make sure his feng shui suite is maintained in taste, 3) thereby making the same casino appear to be more entertaining to the whale than others, and 4) entice him back for continued play.

Yuan claimed that his luck turned bad after discovering the arrangements and that he went from winning 400,000 dollars to losing two million, the report said.

So he continued to play (and lose) after discovering the "bad omens". Wonder what the odds are he'll find a sympatheitc jury...what he will no doubt find though, is some scummy lawyer to take up his case. Then again, his nutty claim has already brought him 200k.

Hey, this could open up a whole new area of case law -- provided the plaintiff hasn't called 9-1-1 about the feng shui violation...
