High-roller has bad feng shui in US casino: report
AFP ^ | 30 May 2009 | AFP

A Taiwanese man who lost two million US dollars in Las Vegas is threatening to sue the casino for using feng shui to cause his losing streak, a report here said.

The man, surnamed Yuan, alleged that the Venetian dug a one-metre (40-inch) square hole on the wall of the presidential suite he was staying in April last year and covered it with a black cloth, said Apple Daily.

The casino also put two white towels in front of Yuan's suite and turned on two large fans facing his room without notifying him, it said.

Yuan claimed that his luck turned bad after discovering the arrangements and that he went from winning 400,000 dollars to losing two million, the report said.

"We Chinese drape black and white cloths only when there is a death in the family. It is such a taboo for regular people, let alone for the gamblers," he was quoted as saying.

Yuan filed a complaint against the Venetian after returning to Taiwan and demanded the cancellation of a two-million-dollar debt to the casino, half of it on credit, it said.

The casino has promised to refund him 100,000 dollars in cash and the same amount in chips, the paper said, without explaining why it had agreed to this.

Yuan had notified the Venetian through his lawyer of his intention to sue for feng shui sabotage if the casino fails to come up with a "reasonable solution," it said.

Feng shui, or wind and water, is an ancient Chinese belief that seeks to channel good and bad psychic energy through the arrangement of furniture and ornaments.

IMO, feng shui is a scam - nothing more than that.

It wasn’t bad Feng Shui, but a poor understanding of the mathematics of probability that did him in. What’s that quote?...something about fools and their money...

For their American and European guests they have hundreds of black cats crossing gamblers paths, ladders for them to walk under and mirrors in precarious positions waiting to be broken.

So this guy his suing the casino for “bad luck”??

What a moron, “bad luck” is when you lose when the odds are in your favor. Casino games have a house edge, your supposed to lose. You only win in a casino if you have “good luck”.

based on this dipwad’s logic; the casino then may have claims to sue people who win?? The bettor's “good luck” threw off the casino's Fen Shui.

I'm suing NY OTB for losing the Kentucky Derby. They switched from blue pencils to red ones at the parlor, and it threw my “Fen Shui” off. I want my 50$ back!!!

"Folded like a cheap lawn chair."

No, the casino was smart. He's obviously a whale, and a compulsive, superstitious one at that. They've got a live one on the hook, and by giving him a little of his money back they hope to ensure even greater windfalls for themselves in the future.

Yep that’s exactly what I thought when I read that they were willing to give him that much money back.

He’s an investment.

"Casino games have a house edge..."

The lone exception is Blackjack, because a card counter can turn the odds in his favor. I count cards. It's not the herculean feat that most people think it is, by the way. It just takes time and dedication to learn the basic strategy tables, and to then learn a counting system and the variations in betting and play that are necessary. I do it mostly for the fun of trying to beat them at their own game, rather than for the money. It takes a very large bankroll and lots of time (the key ingredient) to make a substantial amount of money counting. The huge, multimillion dollar hauls that people have read about (ala the MIT blackjack team) have been pulled off by teams of people, which the casinos are VERY careful to watch for.

Back to the subject at hand; the "Feng Shui" guy is just a superstitious moron. The only thing that matters in a casino is the odds, i.e. PROBABILITY. All the superstition in the world can't repeal the laws of mathematics.

It does not matter what anyone else thinks of Feng Shui.....it's what the gentleman thinks of the Feng Shui.

Plus....I don't care how nice the room is...I'm not staying in a room with a 40 inch hole dug in the wall....especially the Presidential Suite!

This guy loves to gamble and will continue to feed the kitty.

Uh...because they expect him to lose it? Which he will. I'd put up any color curtains the guy wants as long as he keeps dropping money.

Yep, casinos do this all the time. It’s just usually on a smaller scale. That’s what their player reward programs are all about, where players accumulate points for their casino play, and in return receive comps or cash back. Same thing they’re doing with this guy, just trying to make him feel better about losing so that he will return and lose more.
