'Drag Me to Hell's' poster: Is it really scary ... or really sexy?

Going all the way back to the days when Fritz Lang had to flee Germany after Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels figured out that Lang's "Dr. Mabuse" thrillers were crammed with all sorts of not-entirely-hidden cautionary warnings about the evil, malevolent tyrant who was about to transform Germany into a truly evil empire, horror films have had a justified reputation for ruffling our feathers, for stoking our most unruly, subconscious urges and fears. In horror films, there is always more to the images than meets the eye.

That goes double for the slyly evocative one-sheet for "Drag Me to Hell," the new Sam Raimi thriller from Universal Pictures that opens this weekend. The other day I found myself staring at a row of "Drag Me to Hell" posters slapped on the side of a construction site in my neighborhood.

The poster ostensibly offers up the riveting image of a young woman (played in the film by Allison Lohman) in the clutches of a multi-armed beast from the underworld, presumably dragging her off to its hellish lair.........

I guess I’d have to question the quality of the film for them to need sex to sell it. The guy is talking about not wanting to show gore, and yet it is a horror film.

I guess they need to sell tickets.

You mean they have already made a documentary on the Obama presidency?! He hasn’t even been in office but a few months!

Really stupid. When I first saw the promotion on the Internet, I thought it was some direct-to-video cheese. I was surprised to discover Sam Raimi was the director, and that it was a major release.

Ouch...
Though there are those who are in ecstasy about it, so maybe you’re right.

Hmmm. The movie’s called, “Drag me to hell.”

Sounds like it’s a docudrama about being married to a Streisand or Baldwin...

Did you ever notice that the circle in “The Ring” looks like 0bama’s logo? I’d rather watch that videotape than one of 0bama’s speeches.

The picture’s OK and kind of pretty.

However the words “Drag me to Hell” - indicating an at-least half-consensual wish to go to Hell - disturb me.

I used to brush this stuff off. But Hell is real, the abode of the damned who have rebelled against God. I just don’t take allusions to it casually anymore.

Having said that, this is doubtless a conventional, enjoyable horror film with a title I happen to dislike.

The girl is cute, and there's a monster--these are the elements of this kind of film. Psycho, for one, is another movie that blends sex with violence.

I think there are levels to this sort of thing. From what I hear, the Raimi movie isn't as sadistic as so very many of these movies are these days, where scared teens and older geeks can get their jollies seeing women they lust after but who wouldn't give them the time of day get scared and killed. There's a sadistic element in the making of it and the viewing of it. I don't think someone who really likes women can enjoy seeing one chopped to pieces in a film. Of course it's phony, but you aren't drawn to representations of things that don't have some attraction for you.

People who know I find Jessica Biel attractive AND that I love moody, creepy films told me to see the Texas Chainsaw remake, but I fast forwarded through it. I don't enjoy seeing attractive women being terrified and screaming. That's depressing, not fun.
