Pit bulls have a pretty crummy reputation these days. Between the myth of a pit bulls locking jaw and the constant news stories depicting the dogs as ruthless-attackers of innocent children, its no wonder that many people have grown afraid of the breed. The fact is these dogs are no more evil than any other breed. Indeed, pit bulls usually score very high on dog temperament testing, they have a passing rate of 84% compared to the average dog score of 77%, and their sweet disposition around children has earned them the nickname of nanny dog
OK to make the peopole safe we get rid of pitbulls.
Who will be next on the list,Dobermans,Rottweiler,Huskies,Akita’s...
As far as you know...
I am very disturbed that i agree with Barbra on anything.
Not get rid of pit bulls, just not let peopole have the privelege to put them behind an inadequate fence and maybe train them as attack dogs and then not care if they get loose occasionally.
PS, I really like labs and retrievers. My son’s ball python is a great snake.
I do not want to give pit bull owners the leeway to decide how to confine their friendly little cuddlies. And if someone’s baby gets killed by one of these pit bull cuddlies, then we decide that the fence needs to be strenghtened.
I do not have the exact answer. It is just obvious to me that the pit bulls do cause fear in reasonable peopole, and they cause a lot of harm, more so than any other dog type. Properly controlled is what I say.
My 21 year old son talked me into paying for an airline ticket to ship a 12 week old Golden Retriever pup across country with a similar song and dance. "But mom, these football players bought all these puppies from a girl who brought them to school from a breeder in El Paso. They're macho guys and they really don't want the female. They'll sell her to me for half price, but my apartment manager won't let me keep her. Besides, the football team is feeding this puppy tacos and beer. If you could just keep her for me until graduation..."
All the while I'm saying, "I don't need another dog. I have a dog. I'm leaving for China in a month. Oh, all right. I'll keep her until you graduate."
One month with that adorable puppy convinced me to keep her for 15 1/2 years, and we cried like babies when she died.
It sounds like our sons went through the same training course on how to manipulate Mom! :)
Later he said the dog was really my birthday gift!
I know a Golden isn't the same as a Pit Bull, but it was a big step for me because I never liked dogs and was especially afraid of big ones. Now, I wouldn't be without one.
I don’t like the undeserved bad reputation that Doberman Pinschers have. I’ve had 4 so far and they are the most affectionate dogs, even more so than the black labs I had and any mix breed I had as a kid. These huge dobermans want attention all the time. They like to lean on you (The Doberlean), they stick to you (The Velcro Dog) and they are happy all the time. My youngest who is just about 3 is ready for fun all the time. He wakes up happy, goes to bed happy. My older one is more dignified but even at age 6 he gets “a wild hair” and wants to romp like a puppy sometimes. They are so smart. Keep the bad guys away too, and the faint of heart. Just because they’re big doesn’t mean they aren’t sweet. The only dog that ever nipped at me was a little moppy thing that yapped too much.
As for pitbulls, I never met one.
Neat story about Stubby! That was a brave dog!
My doberman books say dobermans were used as war dogs. They called the dobermans “Devil Dogs”. Oh the other similarity between the war dog stories, Stubby may have been gassed, but my dobermans serve up the gas from time to time. Ahem, these are big dogs, they can clear a room. Hee Hee.
Perhaps you are thinking of Norton's Story
Here is Norton enjoying the water with my Sam's momma, Haley, in the foreground.
Sadly we had to say good-bye to Haley a couple of weeks ago
as a fast spreading cancer took her away from us.
She too was a wonderful ambassador for the breed
and we miss her dearly.
They something came up and I had to watch the dog ... it ended up being a permanent stay... she's my dog now and I’v never had a better dog in my life
Went from Pit Bull hater to a Pit Bull defender and protector...
I have a truly wonderful friend. He's a 4 yo German Shorthair. They're one of the finest breeds. I've said what I have to say about Put Bulls. I have absolutely no use for the breed. And all you people who want to extol their virtues won't overcome the almost daily reports of attacks, maimings, and worse.
There are a couple PBT stories here I wasn’t aware of, thank you.
The dog I was thinking of is Weela, Ken-L Ration’s Dog Hero of the Year (1993).
I believe it is wise to be wary of an unknown PBT until you know the dog’s temperament. PBTs with aggressive temperaments should be put down, in my opinion.
Also, as with any dog, young children should not be allowed to play roughly with them—hitting, pulling ears and tails, etc.
We have a PBT who we found as a stray. Once determined she had a gentle temperament, she’s turned out to be an excellent family dog.
Yeah i have a couple of huskies, give them a pigs ear and no naked flames allowed for at least 10 hrs.
LOL!
Good point.
“And here we see the killer pit-bull after being apprehended by the military during a brief but savage struggle.
“True to form, the killer dog's expression shows a callous lack of remorse for the harm done he has done his victims.”
That's what other owners said, too, before their "pet" snapped and attacked people.
Do you write for the drive by media?
LOL.
Notice how he’s got hold of the dog’s two front paws to immobilize it, holding it back from eating the cameraman.
So can an Akita, a Rottie, a Dobie, a Chow Chow, Cane Corso, Presa Canario, Dogo Argentino, German Sheppherd, Bull Mastiff, Tosa, American Bulldog. All these breeds were used in pit fighting in the past.
