How far under the hood?

I can't rebuild and highly tune an engine in a car, but I can do the equivalent in Windows.

Turn off the fancy stuff and it looks 90% like Windows 2000........

I have done that with Vista sometimes. So it can be done with Win7 in hardware—>>advanced settings and theme-—>> areo or classic. What is your point? I forgot, you don’t have any except to be Steve Jobs’ carnival barker

You must post your genius musings on one of those Vista tweeks websites

What is your point?

You paint Windows 7 as this revolutionary OS that will crush OS X. But it's still plain old NT under the hood. Technically it is Windows 6.1, a dot release from Vista the same as OS X Snow Leopard will be a dot release from Leopard before W7 is even released.

Everybody said Vista would be the OS X killer over Tiger. Now we find Vista can't even compete with Tiger, much less it's current competition Leopard. You expect something different this time?

I quickly gave up on Vista tweaks. Why tune a Trabbi when it is still a complete POS no matter what you do?

I concentrate on XP, Server 2003/2008 and SQL Server tweaks. And you wouldn't believe the performance I've been able to wring out of those. Some stability problems they have can't be fixed though.

I dislike wires myself, but I must bow to the necessity that even an elegantly designed iMac can be confounded by the wires for a document scanner, a USB printer, several hard drives (for several different reasons), an iPod dock, a camera card reader, a USB hub, and so on.

Now my laptop suffers only from the hassle of having a power cord. I wish that were true of my desktop.

If you used your laptop as a desktop, from your description of the desktop — that laptop would be looking the same way... :-)

"And you know..., what we were discussing on another thread (that many people don’t know about) — is that Apple computer users get all that free service, in the Apple Stores, when they carry in their computers. They can get all sorts of questions answered, problems solved and you-name-it. Try that with any other computer manufacturer — yeah right! — try walking into the store and asking questions and saying “Can you show me how to do this?”.... LOL... [I get a big laugh out of that...]"

I've come to appreciate that recently. I have a 3 year old Macbook Pro and updated to OS X Leopard. Had a question about Time Machine, the marvelous automatic backup utility that's new in Leopard. Made an appointment online, sauntered into the clean, well-lit and bustling store, and got seen by a factory-trained tech at the appointed hour. He answered my question instantly, in unaccented perfect English, and gave me several tips and pointers that I, a Mac user since the '80s (who also uses Windows, Linux and Sun Solaris) didn't know.

For free.

Recently one teenage son's classic 4.5-year-old 12" PowerBook G4 started misbehaving, so we backed it up and took it into the Apple store for another appointment. I marvel to add that this was the machine's first support incident, after having to wipe his previous Windows machine to the bare metal every few weeks due to malware infestations, despite costly utilities meant to prevent such things.

Alas, the aging Powerbook had developed a display hardware problem. So we sent it in for a refurb. Three days later, it came back completely rebuilt and running better than new, for the astonishingly bargain sum of $327. Fresh hard disk, motherboard, clock backup battery (itself a $80 item) and main battery (ditto). The technician even complimented my son on how well-cared-for the machine is, and what a good model it is, both of which made my boy feel like a million bucks. I'm treating that great little machine to a full RAM stuffing this week, as it's gone through its life of intensive teenage usage with the original minimal RAM configuration and deserves to fly.

Sure put on a brave face, Windows 7 has you all worried. Apple is finished with or without Jobs. Apple’s best days are in the rear view mirror, enjoy the descent back to a 5% share of OSs

I have about had it with you.

Dennis, you are a boor. You are deliberately rude, insulting, and dishonest.

You repeatedly post on Mac and Apple threads to intentionally throw turds and stink bombs and try to hijack them. You offer nothing constructive, often lie, and continually call Mac users names, toss insults at your fellow Freepers, and attack Mac users, both generally and personally, with ad hominem slurs. You post your intentional misrepresentations as fact and refuse to correct them when shown your error, and frequently insult those who dare to disagree with you. You slander and libel Apple as a business, spreading false accusations and not-so-veiled hints of malfeasance at its officers and employees with false claims of wrongdoing and criminal acts. When your errors of fact are pointed out with evidence showing your error, you ignore it and then, apparently intentionally, repeat the same false claims on other multiple threads with apparent porpose of continuing to foment argument and irritation so you can continue to flame other Freepers on the threads.

It is obvious to many on these threads that your purpose is disruption, spreading untruths, your willful ignorance, and your dishonesty. It is not funny. It is not useful. It is not making you look good to anyone.

I have had members of the Mac Ping List, now including over 360 Freepers, contact me to say they no longer enjoy the Mac threads because of your constant, relentless negativity and nastiness. Some have asked to be removed from the ping list because of your shennanigans and behavior. I have come to believe that is your purpose: to disrupt the enjoyment Mac users have had participating in these threads.

Some on this and other threads have pointed out your irrational posts and others have suggested therapy or medications. I don’t think they are joking. They are irritated and are serious. Why? Because your attitude and untruths come across as pathological.

No one appreciates a skunk. . . And you are stinking up every Mac thread you enter. Your sole intention is to be a troll. You have succeeded. You ARE a troll. Go away.

It’s true, Swordmaker, there is a sort of “disconnect from reality” to many of the things that “dennisw” says.

What I have to conclude, in the end, is that he’ll say anything against Apple, no matter how ridiculous, just because he doesn’t like them — or maybe — he doesn’t like that others like their products (it’s either one or the other, that he’s doing it for).

There are other threads which are really “contentious” threads around here on Free Republic. I’ve been in on a bunch of those — but the latest good news on “Mac Computers” or “Apple products” — no, that’s not a super-contentious subject... LOL...

So, yes, I do understand how other average and normal Mac computer users would get tired of that.

You’re funny, dennisw...

You keep saying these things and Apple keeps doing better all the time. You just may end up being “good luck” for Apple if you keep up your negative posting... LOL...

> I have about had it with you [DennisW]...

I agree, Swordmaker, he's nothing but a lousy troll. He's made it very unenjoyable to read the Mac/tech threads. Even Gold Eagle at his most argumentative wasn't this bad, because at least he was bright and experienced, and later became a good conversationalist. DennisW is irrational and does nothing but poop on everything and everybody.

From here on in, the second comment from DennisW I see on any given Mac thread, with his typical crap on it, I'm hitting abuse. It's become intolerable.

Oh, won't you please just shut up and stop your drooling lunacy on the Mac threads, maybe find a Win7 thread, okay? Go talk to yourself in the mirror or something.

I've had it with you, troll, as have most others. Watch it.

MS has been famous for years for its large cash horde. Intel also has a stash. Get ready to short Apple because this recession isn't lifting any time soon and luxury items are getting hit hard. It is back to basics time and Win7 will give a permanent case of agita to Steve Jobs. Wherever he is holed up I hope they don't have newspaper deliveries.

Win7 will take a !0 billion dollar bite out of Apple. Call your broker and get ready to short AAPL

AYRTS, IA? Microsoft's morale is at an all time low. They're unable to execute and far too mired in internal power struggles to do anything about it. You can't be in the industry.

As for Apple, we're seeing stats like 38% of all college freshman having some sort of Mac as their main computer. So rumors of their demise is greatly exaggerated.

That said, you're fighting yesterday's battle. Microsoft's true competitor is Google. The PC has already become a thin client. HTML 5 is windows 7's main competitor, not OSX.

You are just like Steve Jobs. A totalitarian. Jobs wants Psystar out and you want me out.

The funniest thing is I remember those bold brash Apple underdogs and their anti-IBM 1984 commercial. Not that I had a computer then. That commercial was talked about endlessly even if it got minimum airtime
Apple is the new 1984 style IBM
Apple has become its enemy

I have Win7 RC on a desktop for 10 days and on laptop for three weeks (about)
You guys are hosed. It works great with 2gb memory
Win 7 even has the sleep/makeup running better
It is a lean mean Vista on steroids
The first MS release that has lower hardware requirements than its predecessor (Vista) and I can personally verify this.
So like I always say-— Short Apple or you will be taking it in the shorts

You make valid and interesting points but I promise you that Microsoft views Apple as a competitor. There is a GUI arms race between the two. And yes, google is bugging the sh!t out of MS too with its docs and Firefox and desktop searches and much more

Competing over who can make the best buggy whip is a recipe for extinction. Microsoft is in the same position as DEC in the 80s and IBM in the 90s, serving a declining market with no future. The question is, can Microsoft reinvent itself? IBM did, moving into services. DEC didn't and now it's gone.

Personally I think MS is doomed to irrelevance. They don't have the discipline, nor the vision to succeed in today's environment. Maybe BillG will be like Jobs and return to save the company, but I doubt that even he could do it.

Ridiculous. They are a superpower same as China. Apple is like North Korea. IOW they can shoot a few missiles, sow anarchy and do smarty pants stuff like run Windows on a Mac. That is their limited role. Your deployment stats are/were rising in the USA but worldwide Apple is treading water

 You're having reading comprehension issues. *Google* has doomed MS to irrelevance, not Apple. Like I said before you're arguing about who makes the best buggy whip.

Also MSFT is having *huge* internal problems right now. If you knew anything about the tech world you would have heard about that.
